It depends on the STD. Hepatitis is easily passed along from mom to baby, which is why the hospitals will give a newborn baby a hepatitis vaccine when they are first born. HIV can also be transferred to the baby during pregnancy or childbirth. An active herpes outbreak during delivery can prove very risky for the baby, and will usually result in a ceasarean delivery. Gonorrhea can cause blindness and other problems in a baby after delivery. Syphilis is easily passed on to a fetus and can cause very serious problems, including fetal death. Chlamydia can cause eye infections and pnuemonia in infants.
