Babies still have no issues with gifts materially. So I suggest is to give the baby your time and love. That's what will they appreciate most.

Babies don't really need gifts so I would buy the mother a nice scrapbook with some art supplies so she can start documenting her child's growth

I usually crochet matching baby blanket, booties and hat. If I have any yarn left over I make a bottle holder with a strap and/or a bag to carry it all in. For the mother I like to give a journal for her feelings to share with the child when its their time to have a baby.
