There is no way to correctly calculate a probability for the existence of extraterrestrial life. There is no consensus on what process led to life on Earth, so we can't even extrapolate based on our experience here. If life on Earth was directed/created, we have no meaningful way of guessing the probability that the designer/creator put life elsewhere also. If life just "happened" here, we don't really know how. Some researchers, philosophers and biologists believe they have a plausible process, but it can't be tested and any attempt to define a probability for success of such a process will be almost entirely speculative, but certainly extremely (if not incalculably) unlikely. Some assert that extraterrestrial life is certain. Others assert that it is impossible. Both positions are presumptuous. My personal analysis leads to the conclusion that life can't "just happen" here or anywhere else - it defies reason, experience and probability, and I have no data to inform an opinion about whether life was seeded elsewhere.

The chance is 100% ...intelligent life forms exist other than on this planet. It can be discovered by the individual himself (and may be best that way) rather than relying upon "so-called authority" to ascertain the fact. This answers the question of the chance that they do exist. It is 100% certain (with absolutely no reservation or 'guestimation'). Just because some (or many) people are not totally certain does not mean that it is an uncertainty. I am totally certain by personal experience and observation... just as sure as I know that I had breakfast this morning. There is absolutely no doubt. As a sidenote: We probably are not too many years away from discovering the tell-tale physical signs of earlier conflicts occurring on and around Mars about 1,000 years ago, and/or previously occurring conflicts between different celestial forces in that vicinity.

There is no answer to this question yet; only educated guesses. To guess at an answer to this question, you must start with the Drake equation N = S * P * L * E * I * C * F N (the answer) is the number of civilizations in the galaxy. S is the number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy (about 100 million). P is the fraction of stars that have planets around them. L is the number of planets per star P that are able to support life. E is the fraction of planets in L where life evolves. I is the fraction of E where intelligent life evolves. C is the fraction of I that communicate. F is the life-span of an advanced civilization C. Note that I did not attempt to calculate the resulf of this formula. Except for S, al other values are pure speculation. After you calculate the number of alien civilizations that we share the Milky Way with, we then consider the Fermi Paradox. I.e. if a given civilization launches one colony ship every thousand years, than each established colony launches a colony ship every thousand years, and so on, and so on, a single civilization would have filled the galaxy in about a million years. Given humanity's brief existence on earth, a million years is ample time for countless alien civilizations to have filled the galaxy many times over. SO WHERE ARE THEY???? That's the paradox! My personal hunch is... Since humans evolved on earth (or did we????) it is almost assured that other civilizations have evolved in the universe. Note, however, that I said "in the universe," not in our galaxy. I believe that the probability of an advanced civilization is less than one per galaxy. I also believe that interstellar (within the galaxy) travel, in itself, is extremely difficult. Intergalactic (between galaxies) is impossible, or at least so difficult that no civilization has "yet" developed the technology to do it. Hence we are alone in our galaxy. An excellent web site that discusses the Drake Equation and the question of alien life in the universe is actually a Christian Apologetics site: http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/ufo.html Of course, a good web site to visit regarding this is http://www.seti.org.
-
The answer is zero if we are the first intelligent life to appear ( likely so with a young universe) on the scene. By default, we are alone today. The first to arrive at a place (universe, bar, etc) are alone till others come. In the future anything is possible. I want to ask how far do we define conditions for intelligent life. If my laymen mind can see that the exact same sun and earth and their exact same relationship as ours will not produce advanced life. When shoemaker comet hit jupiter and the biggest explosion was the size of the earth, I said, "thank god for jupiter". Then it hit me that anything coming through our solar system is likely to hit bigger things and the big thing has more gravitational pull. So Jupiter is taking most of the hits while life on earth is spared. But Jupiter is not big enough to get then all so one gets through at a time that hits earth in the yucatan and wipes out most life. The fallout allows mammals who remained small for survival exploded with diversity and we are the result. So besides the sun and earth you need a jupiter but not to big. When one misses jupiter, it but be on the right timetable when hitting a earth. Now better minds can see so many things must be duplicates to get life like us. To guarantee life, all factors taken in result with the answer of yes, if the universe is duplicated. No one talks about the probability of life reaching our stage is also very low. Unless we say that their societies are exactly like ours and we know it is not true because of all the one,s here are different. So when they reach a nuclear age, without a John F. Kennedy, they would have blown everything up before venturing into space. There are so many greater and massive dangers wondering in the universe that killer rocks from space would be a welcome site if one had to chose. Don,t forget that if we find life less advanced than ours, After it is said and done, the big deal would be what we did with them as we have always done with new land and the natives. But they could come to us if they are ahead in technology. Every one is relieved that they are like us beside their technology, After the party, we are the natives in their newly discovered land. Well the other option is they are totally different than us. The fear would be a barrier to anything good coming out of it. It would make racist look reformed when most of the planet is looking at these things landing on earth. In a dream I would love exchanges with other life, but I can,t find a good reason to do so in this world.
-
A lot... yeah! They do exsist! For I... am an alien.
-
0% because God did NOT create aliens. God created human-beings, angels, animals, plants and the former angels, who are now demons.
-
no
-
Yes. Since the universe is infinite, it makes sense that life exists elsewhere. I don't believe they have been to Earth though.
-
i beleive they exists ant they are probably calling us " aliens" too.
-
No, but if they do, I am sure that they do not want to destroy us, and I think it is a very big assumption that they are more advanced then us. It's a 50/50 chance, yet everyone things they are smarter and more powerful then us. Why?
-
If they do exist, the chance that they're close enough for contact is very low. If we somehow discover that there is intelligent life 100 light years away, the information would be essentially useless. It would take 100 years for them to recieve a message from us, and another 100 to get an answer (if they answered right away). To actually send a craft that far would take much longer than that. Science fiction notwithstanding, faster-than-light-speed travel is impossible.
-
No. People just made them up.
-
Yes aliens do exist and ther is so much I can say but that will be giving you too much information. I will say that some of them dided on the red planet. It was not always red you know.
-
Not sure. I think there's a reasonable chance that as life developed on earth, it could have developed somewhere else- it might not be life as we define it though- perhaps on other planets beings are composed of pure thought with no physical existence, or perhaps they cover a whole planet in layers like huge sheets, perhaps there is life on Mars but because it doesn't fit our frame of recognition for what life is, we can't observe it. Equally maybe there's not, and earth was just a fluke. Who knows?
-
The drake equation does not take into consideration some minor details that are key points for life to exist. The solar system must have a jupiter sized planet which takes the brunt of incoming stuff that would tear a earth like planet to pieces. We saw was "shoemaker comet" did to the surface of jupiter, explosions bigger than earth slamming in succession. The earth like planet must have a moon, not your regular moons that the rest of the planets in our solar system have. They were created with a completely different process that is common to them all. There moons are far and small. Our moon created by a rare process which put it closer and it is very large. Without this type of moon, the rotation of earth would wobble and the north pole would become the Caribbean in short periods and the Antarctic becomes Hawaii and back wreaking havoc. These are just a fraction of issues the drake equation does not include. Intelligent life, if it evolved everywhere, One of all those evolved first and as far as facts go, they would be alone until a second one evolves. Nothing happens at once. Giving that the universe is young, we stand a good chance being the first one to be intelligent. In the future we would be the aliens. I mentioned Jupiter and our Moon that is different that all the other moons in our solar system. That should generate interest to see all the others factors that make it more and more improbable.
-
lets go with a default belief that life is evolving everywhere. It still does not change the fact that the first group that becomes intelligent, it will be the only group in the universe for a period of time. They will be alone no matter what. The universe is young enough for us to be that group.
-
Refer to William Cooper on googlevideo.com for some interesting theory and speculation of US government perceptions on extraterestial life.
-
In the history of the dogon people (handed down for many generations) there is a legend of beings from the sirus star system who taught the peoples of the earth great things. These beings lived in the seas of the earth and several cultures have legends about them.(possibly the origin of mermaids though the drawings were repulsive.)The dogon people have knowledge of astronomy that existed before telescopes.
-
I do because why would God or whoever or whatever created the universe why would he have made it so big if we were the only ones here? If we are the only ones here it sounds like someone wasted thier time in creating the universe.
-
Do I believe in aliens anywhere? Yes, because the Universe is too large for us to be the only people in it. Even if life is extraordinarily unlikely, the Universe is large enough for it to have occurred several, indeed many, times. Do I believe in aliens on Earth? No. No evidence at all, so they probably haven't got here.
-
I think it makes sense that somewhere there is alien life. Why would the earth be the only planet with life on it out of the billions and trillions of others?
-
Yes. Something out there has to have a better grasp of the unknown than mankind does.
-
Yes, I don't run with the whole Art Bell conspiracy crowd on on theories about it, but in something as big as the universe, it would be a very cruel twist of fate for us to be the only life.
-
Not the intergalactic kind - but I have seen my fair share of aliens at some of the big rock shows!
-
I believe that in the infinite expanse of the universe it would be foolish of me to suggest that it is not possible for there to be another form of intelligent life. I don't believe we are being visited or abducted by aliens.
-
I think that there is a good possibility that there are other intelligent life forms out there. I also think that we probably have not been visited by aliens, but again, there is a good possibility. In general, I suppose that I do believe in them in a sense.
-
i believe in the possibility of just about everything.
-
yes i do.
-
NO-its not lodgical
-
I believe in the possibility that there is other life in the universe.
-
No! I did some reality checks and came up with no real evidence for either. It would be fun and fantasy if these were true...but alas...not so.
-
no. I believe that most so-called paranormal experiences have easily explainable causes, and the rest may not be easily explainable Yet. The so called plasma balls have been disproven as hoaxes, as have the crop circles, and as for things that go bump in the night in old houses..go figure. The lady who owned our house before we bought it was later murdered. My parents thought it was funny to scare us kids whenever the door opened by itself. but the house was a cheap kit house and the locks were faulty...of course it would open sometimes, and boy did it creak and groan. It's not that I don't believe in the supernatural: I do. But I don't see it as paranormal. Supernatural experiences are quite different.
-
yes of course i do i am one!
-
no, but I do believe that other life forms live on other planets, which could possibly evolve into "aliens."
-
No because they don't believe in me:-( 'snif
-
Yes - I think that other life exists out there. No - I don't believe the alien abduction and UFO stories. I think the aliens would be more discreet.
-
The fact that I have seen a UFO helps.I am as sceptical as the rest, but since 100's saw the same UFO it was real.It was too close to be anything else.
-
I believe that there is life elsewhere in the Universe besides Earth. I don't really believe that aliens have visited our planet in spaceships, though. I think if we ever have the chance to explore very distant parts of the universe we might be surprised to find that other forms of life are nothing like we expect.
-
well,on my home planet they dont, but I do.
-
Yes, they enter America seeking a better life.
-
well i believe in mexicans, so I believe in aliens.
-
I believe that in this vast universe of ours, it is not possible that our planet is the only one among presumably a trillion to host life.
-
I believe in them. They knock on my bedroom window every night and want to come in. Ha! Just kidding. I do believe there is life out there besides us. It's just a matter of time before we are all hanging out together.
-
yes.
-
There's more than likely life on other planets out there somewhere! I'm reasonably certain they haven't turned up here yet - as so far evidence suggests they have not. Of course, you never know do you?
-
Yaa I do.But Never have encountered any.But i still do belive that they do exsist . If science can be compared with a mile then we know only an inch.Hence a lot ok mysteries are yet to be unlocked therefore we shouldnt wonder about their exsistance.
-
I do believe in the possibility. But only in the scientific sense, that is life on other planets/moons. But they could come in the form of microorganisms not evil beings.
-
I do believe there are other life forms, as I feel it is terribly arrogant to assume that out of the whole universe we are the only ones in it.
-
Were aren't the only race, and there must be another one out there. Living in the extremities we can't live in.
-
yes, i'm really very very weird, i believe each imagination= one galaxy...
-
I believe that life must exist elsewhere, although in what form I really don't know. As for the idea of beings from other planets being amongst us and transporting us to their mother ships for obscene experiments... ABSOLUTELY NOT.
-
G'day Pushka, Thank you for your question. Yes and no. I believe that given that there are at least tens of billions of planets in our galaxy, the chances are pretty high that life forms evolved elsewhere in the universe. However, there has been no life confirmed as yet on other planets and I do not believe that aliens have visited the earth. I have attached sources for your reference. -
Sheer odds.
-
There must be other life, right? I mean, how can we be the only ones living in this universe? We may not have found any life on the planets in the Milky Way, but have we even gone outside of the galaxy? No. There are so many other galaxies, so how can we ever be sure that there isn't?
-
Yes... In fact they aren't allowed to rent unless they have a green card now. It's really starting to help my community clean up. :-)
-
Yes, mostly just because I think it is silly to assume that Earth has THE ONLY intelligent life in the entire universe. It's just inconceivable.

It depends on which definition for aliens you're using. An alien can be a person from a foreign country inside your country and they do exist. I think you most likely are referring to extra terrestrial lifeforms which began their life somewhere other than Earth. In which case there is no undeniable proof of their existence nor their non-existence. But given the mathematical probability of life originating somewhere other than earth based on the size of the universe and the number of galaxies, solar systems, and planets there must be then it's almost absurd to think life exists nowhere else. To me that would be like flipping a quarter that has a heads and a tails 1 million times and believing it will land on tails every time.
-
YES their us from the future! think about it man...
-
you bet your ass I do
-
I DO! I mean who would think so highly of them selfs to think that we are alone? I for one BELIEVE!!!!
-
Absolutely. There is no way that we are the smartest creatures in the universe.
-
i think it would ne naive for us to think that we are the only planet capable of life. there are how many billions of other planets out there, are we that self centered to think that the whole world was only there to support us? yes i beleive in alien life forms, where they are and how advanced they are and how many differnet kinds there are i dont know but i do not think we are the only planet with life on it.
-
yes 1 st when I was young My brother and I saw an unidenified flying object at my grandmothers farm, we told my dad, who called the airforce base about 5 miles away to BITCH about them landing things on our farm, (immidately the air was full of airforce jets and choppers scanning the area) we( my brother, father and I saw the jets chase (something) and this thing excellerated so fast it made the jets look as they were standing still) yea, there is something else out there. 2 nd) out of all the billions of planets why would earth be the only one with intelligent life..( we are not THAT special.)or that lucky. 3 rd) gut feeling. / a huntch.
-
Yes. I have seen a huge flying saucer. There are usual sightings in Queens NY.
-
Yes. Although I have never witnessed a UFO for sure, I think it is arrogant for anyone to believe that we are the only inhabited planet in this vast universe.
-
For sure, and I have seen a space ship.I am a very rational person and accept the fact of much more intelligent life in the universe. We are medieval in evolution compared with aliens.
-
OF COURSE!! Who can honestly say they don't?
-
legal or illegal?
-
.....
-
Yes. Both kinds do. Chilean governments said U.F.O.s are real. GOVERNMENTS!!!!!! GOV!!! ERN!!! MENTS!!! ...Ments...Mentos..... Governmentos....oh well
-
Probably
-
Yes. They have found microscopic life on other planets. We only have the technology to go in out system, who know who many galaxies there are out there waiting to be discovered. Wouldn't the story of Adam and Eve be about an Alien putting us here to live. God would be an Alien because he's not from earth. If you believe in God(not forgetting my Atheist ABrs.)
-
In my opinion, there's probably other life forms 'out there'. I doubt they have huge heads, slender bodies and big black eyes.... We look the way we do in order to survive in our environment.
-
See Area 51.. Then you'll know
-
999 in 1000 ( there are too many planets out there for earth to have the only intelligent life. also, the bible never states that humans are the only life God made. There have been too many wittnesses to eliminate the chance they exist (and I know too many people who live at the border. ha ha KIDDING) BUT EXIST>>> Yes they do. (when the government feels they can maintain controol, and us morons can handle the truth, they will release the information to the general public)
-
I dont' know but I'm going to assume aliens exist until proven they don't. And that they could be millions of years more advanced than us.
-
I think there is definetly another life form somewhere out in the universe. I don't know why Earth would be the only planet with life on it. It's kinda scary to think about that and how advanced that they could possibly be.
-
I don't believe that aliens have visited us but I would not die of shock if there was life somewhere else out there.
-
yes i do.i believe they are here and that we are using some of thier technology.
-
I believe they do exist. We just haven't found them yet because there are so many undiscovered planets. And they probably aren't the little green creatures we see on tv. To me, it is like sitting in your house and thinking there aren't any more people just because you can't see them.
-
I think they might just be our "missing link" to discovering exactly how we got here.
-
I believe in them basically just because it seems like it should be impossible that out of the entire UNIVERSE, Earth is the only place that holds "intelligent" life. That just sounds ridiculous to me.
-
Not really. I personally don't believe that space aliens exist or ever did exist. However, I believe that even if they did exist, it would be irrelevant to us anyway. Thank you and God bless you!
-
I would not be surprised if there were aliens among us. I would think that aliens would not have to be the "little green men" we hear in the movies. They could look like you and me..
-
i believe that the living things on our Earth cannot be the only living things in the whole universe, an alien is another living thing that is not from Earth right.., so it doesnt mean there are little green men out there maybe species similar to us on the other side of the universe or in a black hole somewhere.
-
I would say probably yes. But have they visited us? Probably not.
-
I personally do not think we are alone in this vast area of unkown existance. I'm not sure if I think there are little green-gray men running around planning a trip to earth, but I do think there is life on other planets we may not know of yet.
-
I don't believe in the little grey/green men or anything like that, but I don't think we are alone in the universe either.
-
I do believe in aliens more that the whole Jesus/Messiah/Son o' God fable. I could give you a one thousand word explaination on why, but my hands re tired as it is...
-
No, we don't exist.
-
If you are speaking of aliens from other world, definitely, and existed 100's of thousands of years before us.We are like the caveman in advancement compared to them.
-
There is a very good reason to believe that Aliens exist, even if people haven't seen one. Do you really think we're the only civilization in this vast, endless space-time continuum?
-
The universe is apparently so huge that it's statistically probable that there is other forms of life out there. I don't believe that they have 'visited' Earth or had any contact with us, however.
-
Sure i think that we humans are self centered i mean why assume we are the only form of intelligent life in the whole universe.
-
of course they do.
-
I do, but I don't really believe the stories they tell about abductions and anal probes. Do you really think a space man is going to fly billions of miles to probe your butt and turn cows inside out? No, he's goig to be looking for the AnswerBaggers to find out what it's really like down here.
