  • They don't know, that's what faith is- belief in something that cannot be proved. I don't think anything in the bible has been proved to be true beyond any doubt, yet millions believe it to be so. There have been a few discoveries of archaelogical sites etc, but nothing concrete. I don't think all Christians believe the entire bible is the exact word of god though, I know a few that don't.
  • We know because of faith and because God's Word, the Bible, is divinely inspired. We also know because life has meaning. Without meaning, then we wouldn't be here. I can explain more, if necessary. :0)
  • This is a pretty long post. please read through...hopefully i dont ramble on. As answers101 has said, We know by faith. BUT not just faith I believe there are many evidences that the Bible is true. Such things include fullfillment of prophecies: "For example, Daniel the prophet predicted in about 538 BC (Daniel 9:24-27) that Christ would come as Israel's promised Savior and Prince 483 years after the Persian emperor would give the Jews authority to rebuild Jerusalem, which was then in ruins. This was clearly and definitely fulfilled, hundreds of years later." Other facts include the scientific facts included in the Bible suggesting that the earth was created by God who inspired the Bible (scientific facts that were not proven until present times-- last few hundred years) : "Job 26:7 (written 3500 years ago): "He stretches out the north over the empty place, and hangs the earth upon nothing." The Bible claimed that the earth freely floated in space. Science then thought that the earth sat on a large animal. We now know that the earth has a free float in space. (The first scientist having this understanding would appear to be Copernicus around 1500. Examples of Scientific Accuracy in the Bible By David Pyles)" heres another----: "Isaiah 40:22 (written 2800 years ago): "It is he that sits upon the circle of the earth." The Bible informs us here that the earth is round. At a time when science believed that the earth was flat, it was the Scriptures that inspired Christopher Columbus to sail around the world. He wrote: "It was the Lord who put it into my mind. I could feel His hand upon me . . . there is no question the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit because He comforted me with rays of marvelous illumination from the Holy Scriptures . . ." (From his diary, in reference to his discovery of "the New World"). (Other statements in the Bible also indicate that God revealed this truth long ago. For example, David said that God has removed our transgression from us as far as the east is from the west (Ps 103:12). On a spherical surface, east and west are infinitely separated in the sense that one can travel indefinitely in either direction without ever attaining the other. However, Solomon described the wind as blowing in circuits, first towards the south and then turning toward the north. North and south are not infinitely separated as east and west, because a southward traveler on a spherical surface will be heading north after crossing the south pole. Examples of Scientific Accuracy in the Bible By David Pyles )" These are just a COUPLE of reasons why I as a christian believe the Bible is the "word of God". Now I'm not trying to force my beliefs on anyone in any way at all. I'm just answering the question. But if you really want to learn... please study both sides of the issue. there are many many resources on these topics which I will share in a second... I urge you to really study this out. Read up on the Facts... BUT consider the source. Realize who the writer is and what their bias is. Because you will see quite a difference in both sides arguments . One will say something is true but the other will say it is false. really study it out!! Here are resources both for and against this argument on if the bible is the 'word of God': these should be FOR: http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/edn-t003.html http://www.inplainsite.org/html/scientific_facts_in_the_bible.html http://www.bible.ca/b-science-evidences.htm http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/false.html Here are some Against: http://www.truthbeknown.com/bible.htm http://www.skeptictank.org/hs/b-error1.htm again, it cant be stressed enough. If you are serious about learning really study both sides. I'm convinced you will make the right choice. Good luck..! :)
  • Basically, they know it's the "word of God" because it says it is.
  • Having a philosophical bent, I have to begin my answer with 'how does anyone "know" anything?' Everything you think you know is based on your experiences, logic, deduction, imagination and the testimony of sources you trust. (clearly an oversimplification for brevity...) Groups like "The Jesus Seminar" appear to decide what they believe and discount the rest of the Bible. The Latter Day Saints accept the Bible only insofar as it is interpreted by their prophets and their other scriptures. It appears to me The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (Jehovah's Witnesses) "reasoned together" what must be true and interpret the Bible according to their reasoning. Many claiming the moniker "Christian" have dramatically differing opinion of the veracity, fallibility and inspiration of the Bible. Typically, Christians who take the study of such things seriously look at the various historical records, the quality of the evidence, facts, records, recorded experiences of others and come to the conclusion that the Bible is the trustworthy Word of God. Obviously others differ as to the conclusion and the quality of the evidence.
  • We know because we can have confidence in the many courageous people that God has used to pass His Word, the Bible down to us over thousands of years. The guardians of the earliest Bible texts carefully preserved the original scrolls and made numerous copies of them. The copying of the text was done with extreme care by highly trained scribes. Take for instance, the Masoretes, who copied the Hebrew Scriptures or “Old Testament” between the sixth and tenth centuries C.E. They would go as far as even counting the letters in the text so as to avoid errors. That was their practice. This kind of meticulous copying helped to ensure both the accuracy of the text and the very survival of the Bible itself. How can we be sure then of the accuracy of the “New Testament” or Christian Greek Scriptures? Copies of the letters from the apostles proliferated – there was wide distribution of God’s Word. This helped to save the Bible in times such as the rule of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who in the year 303 C.E. decided that one way of ending Christianity might be by destroying all copies of the Bible. He failed. A copy of the Bible from that time period now rests in the British Library in London. No, there are no original Bible manuscripts that have been found, but we have reasons for confidence in the accuracy of the Bible as we read it today. Consider the testimony of two respected scholars. W.H. Green stated regarding the Hebrew Scriptures: “It may be safely said that no other work of antiquity has been so accurately transmitted”. Concerning the New Testament” or Christian Greek Scriptures one of the world’s leading authorities on Bible manuscripts, Sir Frederic Kenyon was once quoted as saying: “The interval then between the dates of original composition and the earliest extant evidence becomes so small as to be in fact negligible, and the last foundation for any doubt that the Scriptures have come down to us substantially as they were written has now been removed. Both the authenticity and the general integrity of the books of the New Testament may be regarded as finally established”. Yes, “The word of God is alive”, and we do well to read it. In the month of November, Jehovah’s Witnesses, worldwide will be distributing a special addition of the “Awake!” Magazine. These comments here are taken from that issue. The entire issue is about the value of the Bible today. Make sure that you get your copy from the local Witnesses in your area.
  • They don't. They "believe" it is, they "hope" it is, they very much want it to be, but they cannot "know". It is impossible.
  • they don't. God didn't write the Bible and nobody is perfect.
  • because.
  • it is said to be the word of god, spoken down from the heavens. of course then it was interpruted but hundereds of different people, edited, and re edited. Then edited some more. every word is true. yep.
  • Because HE said so!
  • Exactly that, because they believe
  • Umm, cuz they're Christians...
  • Because the Bible says so. I'll just go and make tea while you get your head around the irrationality of that statement. One lump, or two?
  • have no idea, same as I have no idea how THAT could be the word of a supposed caring deity.........to read it says otherwise.
  • Because they've been brain-washed since birth to believe so.
  • If it were truly written by men FBG, do you really think we'd write about a place called hell...really? I wish there was no such thing, but this is just foolish.
  • Because they dont know any better. Because they just suck up words without even thinking or questioning what they read. oh, the word of God. because the bible says it is the word of God. we know it isnt true. it is written by many different people. all the writing points toward the Living God, Jehovah/Yahweh. The effort of producing the bible is blessed by Jehovah/Yahweh. The translation needs some adjustment, like the word God, for instance. It just covers over the many beautiful meanings that could be easy printed on the page instead.
  • Why not? ;-)
  • hahahaha - that's a great question! I want to know too! I've always wondered that!
  • :) you answered it...inspired by God, God has His hand on His Word.
  • They don't know - they BELIEVE.
  • asked and answered. When we know the people that wrote the particular chapter, that person has been vetted. When we don't know the author, the text is consistent with other text in the Old and New Testament.
  • All religions came up with the same message (Worship God). However, the original message got distorted over time. It is quite natural for people to add their spices every time they tell a story…
  • The church took it all on faith...he he...cause they're that trusting
  • There are many possible "Gospels" not included in the Bible ..the Church "High Heid Yins" got together and decided what to include .. I want to say at Nicenae (???)but I better check my facts ... anyway, the Bible might have been very different. From memory the earliest book included was written some 40 yeasr after Jesus died .. so we gotta wonder how accurate it is, no? They usually compare the 4 Gospels with each other and postulate that there is a "missing" one referred to as Q .. mmm interesting ..got some interesting books about it somewhere (shuffles off, mumbling...)
  • hate to tell you but the church where a bunch of whack jobs them selves...let me tell you how the bible came to be a bunch of assholes who thought they where above every one else sat in a basment deciding wich scriptures where fit to be read to the people and wich weren't then compiled what is essentaly propiganda in to a fine tome and spounted it to the people what happened to the other scriptures? some where locked away deemed unfitto be seen by the eyes of peasents and others burned so that we may never look apon thier words.
  • Well, first are you speaking of the old testament or new. I'm assuming the new testament since that is the part that the church set criteria to determine which book was truly inspired by God. The Jews as well as the church believe the Old testament to be inspired by God The Old and New Testaments were written by 40 different authors, located in Asia, Africa and Europe, over a 1600-year time span. the Bible contains a massive amount of prophecies which later were fulfilled in detail. For example, various Old Testament prophets gave over 300 specific prophecies about the coming Messiah (God's one and only Son who would die for the sins of the world), ie. where He would be born, where He would grow up, etc. These prophecies were perfectly fulfilled by Jesus Christ hundreds of years later. Examples of wack jobs from what I've seen usually don't create a 1,600 year work. It's usually a "jones town massacre, David Koresh, Heaven's gate scenario. Or even Joseph Smith, Jr. "founder of the Mormons."
  • They don't know.
  • Since you say church, I assume you are talking about Christianity. One way to tell is the continuity from beginning to end. The Bible is basically the story of Jesus' family from beginning to end. The early parts are the story of his family, written thousands of years before his birth. In the middle, there are prophecies about him, which He fulfilled. They tell specific details about him, including from which branch of Abraham's descendants He would come and very specific details of His death, all written a very long time before His birth. Here is one, from Isaiah 53, which was written hundreds of years before the birth of Christ. 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppression [a] and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken. [b] 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes [c] his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand. 11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life [d] and be satisfied [e] ; by his knowledge [f] my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, [g] and he will divide the spoils with the strong, [h] because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Now how did Isaiah, who lived hundreds of years before Christs birth, know that Christ would be "pierced" and buried in a rich man's grave (Joseph of Arimithea) before being raised? How did he know that Christ would stand silent before Pilate and Herod and offer no word in His defense? How did he know Christ would be despised; unless God allowed him to see a vision of the future? And before you say "he couldn't know, therefore it must have been written after Christ, remember that Christ repeatedly quotes Isaiah. He quotes Isaiah in a way that lets you know He expects His audience to be familiar with the words of Isaiah. Therefore, logically, Isaiah was written long before the birth of Christ and was familiar to everyone He was speaking to.
  • It wasn't divinely inspired. It was strategically written by a group of people. They were pretty smart actually. Look at what has become of it today.
  • They need something to lean on, and make sense of life. It's hard to believe that such a tradition might not actually be teh word of god, but the result of years of human control and power shifting into one book of how a life should be lived while using the fear of a hell as the source of control. Kind of like a robber with an unloaded gun.
  • They have no clue.... But when they say that some naive people will believe it thinking God was a super human and he wrote the whole thing in few days etc. Once they say that, nobody will question them. As simple as that. Then they can preach everything in that book is true and not questionable too. I have a great business and nobody questions.
  • When Christians say the bible is the “word of God”, how do they know? Good question. The people of ancient Israel were presented with the same problem. How do we know that what this guy, who claims to be a prophet, really speaks for God when he says, “Thus sayeth the word of the Lord”? Proofs were required. How does one make such a proof? By foretelling in advance things that will happen. Usually there are short term and long term prophecies. If a supposed prophet made a prediction that did not come true, then you knew he did not speak for the Lord. What is the penalty for falsely saying “thus sayeth the word of the Lord?” You got killed. Make one wrong prediction and you die, and your words are disregarded. Not 19 out of 20 right. 100% of the time correct. If we can see that predictions, such as how long Israel would be in bondage to Babylon (70 years exactly) became true, then it would follow that the other predictions by that same person could be relied on. Others have shown how the bible contain information with regard to scientific phenomenon that were unknown in ancient time. The bible teaches that in one moment of creation, god made all things out of nothing. Nothing became everything. Science has changed its theories to explain how everything came into being. We now have the Big Bang theory, in which, at first there was nothing, no time, no space, no matter, and then it exploded. And what was nothing, became everything. The bible talks about the earth being hung on nothing. We have representations of the number pi accurate to within one part in a thousand. We have predictions of fountains in the oceans, discovered in the 1970’s (black smokers) and pathways in the seas, (Gulf Stream discovered in the late 1700’s)
  • Well they slaughtered enough people in His name that's for sure.
  • They don't know. Its a threat. If they do not believe it they will go to hell muhahaha :P
  • because gawd will shrink their winkies if they dare say otherwise
  • Because it caters to the basis of their religion - believing hearsay without any logical reasoning.
  • It is not a knowledge, but rather a belief. "In religion and theology, revelation is the revealing or disclosing, or making something obvious and clearly understood through active or passive communication with supernatural entities (divine, ...). It is believed that revelation can originate directly from a deity, or through an agent, such as an angel. One who has experienced such contact with or communication from the divine is often called a prophet. Some religions have religious texts which they view as divinely or supernaturally revealed or inspired. Revelation or information from a supernatural source is of much lesser importance in some other religious traditions. It is not of great importance in the Asian religions of Taoism and Confucianism, but similarities have been noted between the Abrahamic view of revelation and the Buddhist principle of Enlightenment." • they don't...it's a book that's been changed so many times...they don't even know if THE LORD was real or not
  • They don't. It is opinion, blessed is he, who has the opinion, that Jesus story, told by unknown men, who none of us ever met, is true.
  • 8-18-2017 If you don't believe in God, then of course you don't believe the bible is His word. There is no point in discussing it because it is nonsense by definition. Hebrews 11:6 "But without faith [believing] it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."
  • I get a HUGE kick out of all this.......'word of God"? well, um, perhaps.....but let's not forget the Council of NIcea; in the 4th century, when a bunch of bishops or something got together TO DECIDE WHICH BOOKS WERE TO BE IN THE BIBLE AS WE KNOW IT NOW......... The Gospel of Thomas was kicked out.......why I have no idea.....so when you say 'word of God' you really mean 'word of God per MAN"S opinion".........we will never know, EVER what other books could have been a part of the bible we know today.. I detest all organized religion, as they are all MAN MADE........none of them follow what's taught in the bible,,,,,,,,,well, perhaps the Jewish people; they seem to have gotten it right. the other denominations? MAN MADE ALL OF THEM.......... I could do on and on but will shut up now!!! LOL :-D

Well...you're being a LITTLE loose with history. The Council of Nicaea didn't address the contents of the Bible. Certainly it did not address The Gospel of Thomas or its admissibility. That happened LATER, AFTER the death of Constantine, in several councils and synods, but most importantly (and with a significant degree of influence) in the 397 Council of Carthage. {{ http://www.bible-reviews.com/charts/history-western-bible-canons.php }} The Gospel of Thomas was explicitly "kicked out" even later, in the Decretum Gelasianum. *** The (primary) doctrine addressed by the Council of Nicaea was ***the deity of Christ***. The contents of the Bible was NOT addressed (as can be seen by the several DIFFERENT proto-Bibles that post-date Nicaea, as well as the later Councils and synods that DID address this matter). Also: the doctrine of trinity was NOT addressed at Nicaea.

That being said, your answer is largely correct. It WAS a group of high-ranking officials who decided what books should belong in the Bible. Note that there are different Bibles with different contents, both in history and in the present time. Why? Different groups of high-ranking officials making different decisions regarding what documents belong in the Bible. That being said: your comment, "we will never know, EVER what other books could have been a part of the bible we know today" is also inaccurate, as we can compare (for example) the Carthage Bible (which was adopted by the original Latin Vulgate) - 72 books - with the modern official Catholic Bible (73 books), the modern official Anglican Bible (75 books and 6 "chapters"), the modern typical Protestant Bible (66 books), etc. (several etc.s)
  • Easy, Bible prophecies contain hundreds of prophecies relating to past nations, futuristic nations, Jews in exile, Israel reborn, cities, catastrophic events, pandemics, mandates, the mark of the beast to make way for the NWO, rumors of wars and many more. If skeptics cannot understand Bible prophecy, they are blind. Acts 26:18 "to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in Me."
  • We don't know. We BELIEVE. (And, I point out: some Christians believe that means one thing, some believe that it means another.)
  • “I've had an unholy desire to invite some atheists to a dinner and then serve the most fabulous gourmet dinner that has ever been concocted and, after dinner, ask them if they believe there was a cook.” – Ronald Reagan
  • All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 The prophets were said to be influenced by the Holy Spirit. See link - http://systematicchristianity.org/TheHolySpiritHasSpoken.htm
  • This is a very good question! You would expect God’s Word to be unique, and the Bible is. Billions of copies of it have been printed in hundreds of languages. The wisdom in the Bible has the power to change people for the better.—Read 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Timothy 3:16. We know that the Bible is from God because it accurately foretells the future. No man can do that on his own. Consider, for example, the book of Isaiah. A copy of it made over a century before Jesus’ birth was found in a cave near the Dead Sea. It says that the city of Babylon would become uninhabited. That first came true many years after Jesus’ earthly ministry.—Read Isaiah 13:19, 20; 2 Peter 1:20, 21. Sup nicky's, long time no see. Yes indeed, the Dead Sea scrolls were one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th Century.
  • The Bible is a historical document, and as such we only need to look into what it says about itself. When Archaeologist come across some document from some past decade, and that document says something like; this is the writings of/ or diary of so and so, do they accept that statement as fact? or say we don't have any proof? In the Bible there are several scriptures that state that is the author of the Bible is God. 1st “Prophecy was at no time brought by man’s will, but men spoke from God as they were moved by holy spirit.”2 Peter 1:21 NWT 2ed “When you received God’s word, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but, just as it truthfully is, as the word of God.”1 Thessalonians 2:13 NWT American Standard Version Exodus 24:4 "And Moses wrote all the words of Jehovah, Byington says at Exodus 24:4 "And Moses wrote down all Jehovah’s words. The King James Version says, 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. Even our Lord Jesus said at John 17:14 " have given them your word... Byington He also said at John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth...American Standard Version. So we use the proofs in the Bible to conform our faith that the Bible is the Word of God. This link has more information about the question; Is the Bible the Word of God? https://www.jw.org/finder?srcid=jwlshare&wtlocale=E&prefer=lang&docid=2010160 I hope you find it interesting.
