I have a tendency to describe textures, patterns or tastes with gestures. It seems like I can convey them more accurately that way. +

I am Italian. Does that answer your question? if I lost both of my arms in a car wreck, i don't think that I would be able to talk at all. LOL.
-
It usually looks odd and out of place when people do it. To me it does anyway. I don't ever speak with my hands (Or I might sometimes but not realize it).
-
Not usually, but if I'm explaining something to someone and they aren't getting it, my hands provide some backup.

I can do a bit of signing.

Its a learned thing and you can learn to talk without waving your hands around like you are swatting flies. Its disconcerting when people wave their hands around.. Minimal hand usage is okay. Italian blood coursing thru your veins is no excuse and has nothing to do with it.. Its simply a learned behavior that you can unlearn..

Generally speaking no I use my verbal ability to get my message across. There are definitely people who don't talk with their hands. One example I can think of is Stephen Hawking.
