Like most people in the UK I'd only had the one Monarch & head of state so this is a major change, although not a great surprise given her age & recent health. Charles became king immediately & is now King Charles III although the coronation will be a few months away.

It's the law - that is: unless he refuses the office, the office HAS to fall on him (unless he were a Catholic, which he is not).
