The Holy Spirit aids in this process. You can ask Him anything at anytime, but you have to have the faith that He will answer you. God usually speaks to us and guides us via The Holy Spirit. He often confirms what He speaks through His Word.

You start by saying Dear Heavenly Father, you thank him for blessings he sends, then HUMBLY you ask for the things that you need. In the name of Jesus Christ amen. God usually answers me with a direct and clear thought in my head, but sometimes he sends the answer through the mouths of others and as soon as I hear it I know its the answer to my question. Sometimes the answer is no and sometimes its wait. And sometimes He protects us from knowing things we can't handle or for which we are not yet ready. Too often we pray for things that are not good for us, or God has something even better in mind.

Jesus gave an example of how to pray in Matthew chapter 6. In verse 7, he explains that we should not say the same things over and over again. Then Jesus begins his prayer in verse 9. John 9:31 explains that God listens to those who fear him and do his will. For example, if a child is praying for a new video game, do you think that God is listening and will answer that type of prayer? Our prayers can be answered In different ways, through the Holy Spirit, through daily Bible reading or through comments during a conversation with one of God’s faithful servants. God may answer our prayers in a way that we do not expect, instead of removing the problem, he may give us the strength to endure it (Phi 4:13).

I find that meditation helps a bit in providing me some necessary answers. I often take dreams as an answer from the divine.
