  • None whatsoever. They're usually either idiots (so we're thinning the herd) or they're naive (and they're getting a wake up call). You have dummies who go hiking in Iran and then you see them on TV shrugging their shoulders asking what happened? Visiting North Korea and then begging for help when they get sent to prison or get 50 lashes for jaywalking. Retards.

      Exactly.
  • Proverbs 12:15 “The way of the fool is right in his own eyes,But the wise one accepts advice“. As imperfect humans we do not always heed warnings, nonetheless, I am saddened by human suffering. I do not find any joy or satisfaction from seeing others suffer.

Could you make that a little clearer ?

      N. O. Spells NO.
    • Ice man
      Thank you for clarifying that.

Hope you don't mind, Old Chap, but I have finally decided to "follow" you. In a non-psycho-killer kinda way.
    • Ice man
      No problem, I noticed. : )

      Please put some clothes on.
  • I consider them plain stupid!
  • Not in the slightest.
  • It is such a risk just going there, I do feel for them. It pains me to see people tortured or thrown in prison. It is terrible.

You have a beautiful and kind heart, but you can't feel sorry for people who foolishly put themselves in harms way on purpose, especially knowing full well the consequences of their actions beforehand.
  • Who am I to judge the motivation/necessity of people that do travel in these places?
  • If a chance was there to visit I wont go. Trouble could happen by mistake. Those laws I think are different.
  • Of course! We all make poor choices! But what about those that are there for humanitarian missions? I had a friend who went to Thailand to teach English to Thai teachers she never got in any trouble there. It was an awesome experience and I'd love the opportunity to do something worth dying for like helping children with cleft palettes or the fistula patients in Africa or the rape victims in the Congo. Yes! I admire people like that!

You missed the boat completely on this one. This isn't about doctors and teachers and peace keepers. It's about stupid tourists who had been warned not to go, but go anyway thinking they're going to buy drugs from warlords. It's about stupid tourists who get caught defacing sacred shrines in foreign lands. It's about stupid tourists who want to go back packing through Taliban country. It's about stupid tourists who wanted to take photos & got kidnapped, tortured and held prisoner by terrorists in areas where 8 year old kids are running around with full banana clips in AK47's. Do you admire those people too ? They get no sympathy from me.

I didn't miss a boat. I pointed out several instances where it's admirable. And you don't have to be a doctor or teacher to help. Many missionaries do the same taking food, wheelchairs and many go to places destroyed by natural disasters and help clean up. If you were only talking about stupid tourists you should have said so. I didn't miss the boat. YOU ALL DID!

No, the question was clear and specifically asks about people who insist on "traveling" in war torn countries. "Traveling" indicates tourism, not humanitarian projects with established bases of operation.
    • Linda Joy
you have to travel in them to get there

Apples and oranges, both fruit but not the same at all.
    • Linda Joy
Especially if you're writing poetry. Nothing rhymes with orange! Do you think the fruit was named for the color or the color name for the fruit? and then I SMH because questions like these are the reason I don't sleep at night.!

Linda, and what about those people who travel into war torn Afghanistan to "help" and then get kidnapped? Do we risk our troops to go and get them? They knew the risk when they went, right?
