I was put in a "Corner" for a timeout if I did something bad. There were also spankings, and the infamous "Belt" that was utilized.

Time outs mostly. Spankings. Extra chores. Had to write a few apology letters which felt like punishment. It was consistent and appropriate. But after 10 or so I did whatever I wanted. I recently saw a young kid getting one of those public humiliation punishments where he had to stand on the street with a sign. "I stole from 7 Eleven." I felt bad for him because I assume his parents are lazy and not too bright. Or maybe just cruel. Or all of it perhaps.

Are you a parent? I took all kinds of advice from so called 'experts' that sounded fishy to me even then, but I was relatively young and they were 'experts'. Also that is the one job I felt was the most important to get right and was willing to try anything to get it right. -

I had a son who died 10 years ago. So I'm not a parent anymore. It really bothers me when I see people take their children for granted or are shitty parents. I'm guessing you are a good mom, since you cared enough to try hard and get advice from experts :) -

I don't really remember having parents around. My mom was always at work and the older girls were left in charge. Till 2 nd grade

I got my little butt spanked usually with a belt. It was never a beating however at the time I knew I was being killed. Today I thank my parents for loving me enough to make sure I grew up properly. Spankings are a good method of discipline when properly applied and not beatings.

My parents believed in denying privileges!!! smart people!! I LOVED the movies.....still do.....I went every week; and when I was 'bad' my mom'd say..NO MOVIES FOR A MONTH..........omg OMG.......then when TV came along (I'm 75) it was 'NO TV FOR A WEEK!!!'......AGAIN, OMG.........she also took away my favorite magazines, too.......and made me stay in the house so I couldnt play with my friends. SMART PEOPLE.......think that all parents should do this, although I do recognize that all kids are different; some , this may not hurt at all....but it sure did me!! lol............ so take away privileges and you may have the answer!!!

My stepfather grounded me from TV a couple of times. I remember thinking at the time how stupid that was cuz I never watched TV anyway. And when I did they wouldn't let me watch the channels I wanted anyway it was always what they wanted to watch. Not being able to go outside was a little more rough but I'd just start a project of some sort to do inside -

When I was grounded I could only go to school and back and do my paper route or collect for it. Other than that I was at home. At that time the "local" TV out of Mexico came on at 4 PM and off at 11 PM. I also had to have the grass cut and pay my paper bill by 2 PM every Saturday. Grounded wasn't really too much of a grounding. I just couldn't go see friends or have them over.

My father was a believer in the belt spankings for most things. For school related punishments he'd literally take my bedroom door off it's hinges so he could look in to see if I was doing my homework or studying. It was a stupid punishment that only served to annoy me - never motivated me.

Seems like it would have been easier to just leave the door open. I can only remember getting in trouble at school three times once I got a paddling for chewing gum once the coach hit my hands with a ruler because I told him I didn't like football and then that little fire alarm incident that got me three days in school suspension. I was usually a good girl. My boys were always in trouble when they were little! Expelled from kindergarten!

A fly swatter on the rear for light infractions. A wide wooden salad spoon maybe only once.(All mom had to do was go for that drawer and we would straighten up and listen.

My mom had a look. All she had to do was throw that look and whatever we were doing stopped! My ex once hit me with a fly swatter 'till blood came out of my legs.
