When I first moved out. I was never expected to do my own laundry. My mother did it all. I did help her out though.

Probably late teens?
-
When I left home at 19. My mother didn't let us use her washing machine. I did the same thing with my kids. Best to learn at the laudromat rather than tearing up Mom's machine.

I was 11 when I started doing my own laundry.
-
I don't have much of a recollection of NOT being expected to do my own laundry. Probably about age 12 was when I started to do all my own laundry and helping with others' laundry.
-
We all helped with the laundry in teams but when I went off to college I started doing my own.

I was too old to play with Barbies, but too young to drive a car when my Mom stormed through the house, heaped a pile of clothes in front of me and said something about it not being her job anymore. She showed me the dials on the washing machine (which I probably didn't understand until my mid 20's...what's the difference between a cold rinse anyways?)but last month I delivered my 4th baby boy and she stayed with me for a while to help out with the kids and she even did some laundry! God Bless Mom's hearts they are the best!

I was 9 when I got a $3 dollar a week allowance to cook, do all the laundry and clean the entire house. Talk about cheap child labor.

Hi NUNYA, Good question. I guess somewhere around Middle School I wanted to do my own laundry because it gave me more control over when/if it would be done ;) How far are you from Yellowstone?
-
If you passed puberty and still expected your mom to do it for you you are a bit slow.

I was never 'expected' to do my own washing. I would always help mum out for as long as i can rembember with things like the house cleaning and the washing. It ended up then being me who did the whole families washing when i was around 14. although not all the time, it was just who ever had the time did it. that what you do when you all live together isnt it? When my bf moved in with me and my family he had never done his own washing ever... then he ended up help out with every ones washin to. I think our house was differnt to most families. I cooked dinner more than my parents because i finished school at 3 so had more time then them who finished at 6 or so. My friends used to always tell me my mother was horrible becasue she expected me to do all the cleaning cooking and washing. She did not expect me to do it. but if i wanted a clean house, food and clean clothes why not do it my self? i have not found it so difficult now that i live out of home, it is just the same. even easier because there is only two of us!

I was in college.

I was about 12.
-
I was 12. At hat time I was doing everything alone for 2 weeks, for me and my little sister. I cooked meals practically from nothing and was washing some laundry by hand.

40. It was a great hardship;)
-
At 18 when I got married.
-
I started doing my own at 11/12, I think.
-
I still live at home, and I don't 'do my own laundry' in the conventional sense. We all put our laundry in a big basket, and when there is enough for a load of washing, the person who is there does it. It's not expected that you wash your own clothes, just that the family's clothes get done at some point.
-
I was about 13. So was my friend when she started.
-
My mom didn't want anyone else doing laundry. She was way controlling.
-
Never, I'm 17 now. whoa that's weird, maybe I should start now.
