  • Nuclear reactions depend on either nuclear fusion or fission to form a new element (i.e. 2 Hydrogen mashed together yields helium, etc).
  • This is the most fundamental concept of chemistry. The molecules of a substance can be broken apart into individual atoms, but each element consists of atoms of the same kind which cannot be further broken apart. Well, actually atoms do come apart at high energies, and the nucleus comes apart at even higher energies, but under everyday conditions atoms can't be broken apart. Not the way molecules can. That's the origin of the word 'atom' -- Greek for that which cannot be cut.
