When I am the most angry or depressed, I just think about the bright side of it, or think about how worse it could be. That usually snaps me out of my bad mood. It might not cheer you up and it doesnt make your problems go away, but it makes you happIER. Also, I heard that just smiling releases endorphines; chemicals in your brain that make you feel good.

Yes, I already have =]

No, I don't think so, but you can allow yourself to be happy and choose to be so, to look at things with joy and possibilities and not in a negative light.
-
You might be able to sell it to yourself. But sooner or later you realize that you bought a piece of crap.

Over minor upsets, sure. Over major ones, no.

If only...

Only if you understand that happiness is a decision, and refrain from allowing yourself to entertain negative or depressing thoughts. http://jamesallen.wwwhubs.com/think.htm

I don't know that you can just flip a magic switch, but "will" is very important for setting the stage .. or opening ourselves to the POSSIBILITY of being happy. Don't think it's anything we can give anyone else either. To be happy? We do, indeed, have to have the WILL to be so.

I can sometimes, if I'm troubled about how things in general are going and worried about my job, making ends meet, etc. I tend to turn it all off - and avoid the news - and just concentrate on all the good things in my life. I don't mean to be hiding my head in the sand, but sometimes you just need a mental health day.

Yes, but it takes training. You have be able to recognize that you are the only one in charge of your feelings and you have the ability to decide how you are going to react or respond to circumstances that are otherwise out of your control. There a lot of ideas and tips on how to do this here: http://www.ehow.com/Search.aspx?s=make+yourself+happy&Options=

Happiness is what we make. It's our behavior and attitude that brings happiness to us as well as people around us. So I do like myself and others around me to be happy.
-
I don't think so. I do think that what I choose to DO when I am unhappy affects my mood.
-
I've 'tricked' myself into being happy before amidst all my problems, coupled it with loads of caffeine and chocolate. Long story short, it worked so well for about 30 minutes...then I crashed like a sack of shit. It was horrible, never doing it again...better off just being constantly depressed.

depends on how you define "happy"...
