If I could I would change that early morning at the hospital, when I waited patiently as my Mother was dying in the emergency room. Instead I would go see what they were doing to save her. But there I was, full of fear, as hours went by slowly, until finally a doctor appeared to say "she's gone" and then asked me if I needed a Valium . . . I remember my crying uncle going after him, trying to understand what this meant. I would do that too this time, instead of not ever knowing how hard they tried to save her. My Mother was a strong woman, who loved life and didn't have to die. She walked the length of our house, some 40 feet, from her bedroom to the kitchen door, and out to the ambulance. We shared few words waiting for help to arrive. The next time I saw her she was dead at 54, from a heart attack. Mother worked all her life to be happy one day, and she deserved more time to be able to experience it. This was in 1978, I was 21 then. My feelings of anger, fear, and absolute horror at the chain of events that followed have never been resolved all my life. In addition to my strong belief that it's not right to "accidently" bring life into the world, and these hurt feelings, I've never had my own children. An unfullfilled void, has allowed the pain to continue to exist in the rawest form all these years. Knowing it doesn't make it better either, if anything it makes it worse, because I can't change it at this point in my life.
