kinda hard to answer without knowing what brand or model set you have, but most of the time this is a failure of the sustain circuit. both the y and z sustain boards use high power amp circuits and fail commonly, both should be changed as a set

Also I've read when you hear that popping sound it means the actual plasma panel burnt. It will be time to replace the panel or toss it.
