What a great question, Sweet T. When I was very young, we lived in Detroit Michigan and my grandpa had a woodworking shop..he was quite a craftsman. I remember the smell of wood shavings..I love that smell to this day because it reminds of my grandfather. As for my grandmother, the smell of nutmeg..she was a fantastic cook/baker and she'd make luscious pastries with a hint of nutmeg..so nutmeg reminds me of my grandmother! :) Happy Monday! :) ((hugs))

I'm going to recycle one of my old answers: Coffee. My first memories of coffee are from when I was very young. We often had occasion to stay with my grandparents in Idaho. Coffee for me represents security, warmth, love, and belonging. Several times when we stayed, we were experiencing a blizzard. Grandmother's house was over 100 years old, Constructed of 3' thick lava rock walls holding a very steep cedar shake roof. We would sleep upstairs in long abandoned, but very well kept rooms containing many items from my mother's youth. Most notable were the cedar scented quilts stored in the hope chest that we children would pile on the bed and disappear under for warmth. Before daybreak, with a blizzard howling outside and delivering 2 feet of snow, Grandmother would start stirring on the floor below. First you would hear the percolator making sounds like someone snuffing their nose... The sound alone would excite you, because it meant that that sweet woman who created your mother was about to receive you. Then the smell of dark roasted coffee would waft up through the house and infiltrate the room. Despite the dangerous storm, I always felt safe and at home, because you knew the smell meant that you could run down the stairs and sit on her lap. The smell of coffee meant that you were going to receive a special audience with the family matriarch, who was going to hold you, feed you, keep you safe, and have a conversation with you that made you feel special and grown up. My grandmother has long gone to heaven. If she were here today, I would find it impossible to sit on her lap take comfort from her because I have grown way too large. I don't have to miss it though... The smell of coffee puts me there.

Apple Struddle makes me think of my Mom's mom and the scent of cardboard makes me think of her dad because he did jiggsaw puzzles up to the time he passed away, he actually passed away suddenly while he was doing a jigsaw puzzle. :( My dad's dad had shelties so any dog smell makes me think of him, my dad's mom was a smoker so cigarette smoke makes me think of her.
