The latter.

He is hit and miss. But, it's not easy to make a good horror movie. His best movie I think is Signs.
-
I haven't seen Lady in the Water or whatever it's called yet. Should I bother? OK then, I won't.
-
One hit wonder.

I don't really like any of his movies. I didn't see "The 6th Sense" until a couple of years after it came out, but everybody and their freakin' mother kept talking about the ending around me...and I'm like, "Hey I haven't seen that movie yet, thanks for ruining it for me!" So when I did finally see the movie it was just boring, because I already knew the BIG surprise. Without that, the movie just sucks.

Overrated putz. If HE can make money with the crap he's put out, I want to take my latest TP wipes and put those on the screen too. Prob'ly composed better...

Hype is a marvelous thing. . .or not. I don't care for any of his films.
-
He's not a "genius", but he is a good filmmaker! I actually loved "Signs and The Sixth Sense" and Liked "The Village and Lady in the Water". But, I do understand I'm in the minority!
-
Genuis - I love the way he does his films.
-
one good movie and it wasn't Sixth Sense
-
He tends to be a "big reveal at the end" kind of director. And although I loved "The Sixth Sense", "Signs" and most of all "Unbreakable", am kinda hoping he does something different next time. Something that doesn't end with a "Gotcha!" Hope this helps.

I'm gonna paraphrase a comment from Samantha Carter: "Why would an alien race that can't take water travel all this way to a planet that's covered in it?"
-
I'd have to say "One Hit Wonder" based on the films I've seen. The Sixth Sense used all nine of his film-making lives.
-
Genius... at putting me to sleep.
