Because our politicians are a-holes, and the majority of the world only sees the actions of the government and not the citizens. If you were outside looking in what would you think?

Because we look after our own interests instead of relying on others. We call it protecting our ass, while they call it a "cowboy mentality".

The United States is seen as corrupt, arrogant and a bully.

Because we control what happens in the world and usually only look after our own best interest. Bush has made the problem worse the past 8 yrs. It wasn't as bad when Clinton was in office.

They are envious that we are a powerful nation. Keep your head high and feel lucky you were born a American!

Because we're egotistical and the majority of our policies revolve around profit and capitalist gain, often devaluing humanity or neglecting human rights altogether in favor of gaining that profit or gain. Also, look at the leaders we've elected over the past 15 years. We're supposed to be a nation for the people, but instead we're taking steps towards a fascist, Stalinist, Hitler-esque dictatorship and closing down our freedoms and democracy. In addition, we think that we're the worlds police force. We're not. We only get involved in war and "defense" because without it our economy would collapse. Once the Cold War ended and the Berlin wall fell, our defense departments economy took a dive. So what did we do? We got involved in the Middle East, because we needed yet another war to promote nationalism and to boost the US Economy. A lot of us are also ignorant. How many people actually know anything about the Islamic faith, or the history of it? How many people actually know what a socialist or a communist is, or what the UN does? But, of course, this is my opinion, and I may be wrong, but I feel that these are the reasons the rest of the world hates us.

Because the rest of the world recognizes that the United States government has, for all of its public exhortations about democracy and freedom and human rights, behaved as an empire. Since that late-1800s, you would be hard-pressed to find a 5-year period in which the United States did NOT invade another country or conduct war somewhere in the world. When the US has not been actively militaristic, it has supported despotic repressive regimes all over the world (for all the wailing about what a bastard Saddam was, he was OUR bastard in the 1980s) in exchange for guaranteed access to natural resources (primarily oil). I'm not sure that the rest of the world hates us. While most of the people in these countries dream of our freedoms, it is the Governments of these countries that see those freedoms as a threat to their control over their population. The biggest threat to oppression is freedom. These Governments must portray America as imperialistic and corrupt in an attempt to squash the peoples desire to be like us.(have our freedoms). It also doesnt help when we have our own citizens repeating this propaganda. America does more good for the world than anyone, Maybe we should put a halt to all foreign aide, see how much they hate us then..

The rest of the world does not hate the United States. Some nations, as a whole, are against us, are opposed to our government and/or our national ideals. Lots of people, worldwide, dislike the U.S. Those that do usually do so because of our governments actions and because they do not understand our way of life. But the "rest of the world" is a gross exaggeration. There are plenty of people who admire the U.S., are not opposed to our government, wish they were here, want the life that we live etc. Anytime someone makes a wide sweeping statement about "the world" or about how an entire group of people think or feel; be wary. There is seldom such pervasive certainty.

This is more an answer than a question? . Could it be because we are the "big boy on the block"? . envy and "hate" will always exist against the biggest and strongest.......could it be that this is just really getting out of hand?

Not only is the US not 'free', it keeps it's population ignorant of what freedoms are enjoyed by those in the civilized world largely through fear and ignorance. It's media is little more than a mouthpiece for the corpocracy that rules the country and the middle and working class in the US are squeezed mercilessly by that corpocracy for more and more money, whilst being reduced to the status of mere consumers when it comes to, what in other countries would be considered basic human rights, not dependant on income - health care and higher education being only two. It's wars are for the most part wars of aggression, disguised as police actions and, in the case of the Iraq war, are not only not mandated by the UN but are illegal. The majority of the population are taught from birth that they are free (but not to question whether they really are) and 'freedom' is used as a mantra to justify aggression against other nations, both economically and militarily and denial of real human rights in the US itself. It is not that, apart from fundamentalists, the rest of the world hates America but that many are concerned at the policies of a regime that holds itself above it's own laws, let alone international law and where poverty, ill health and ignorance are rampant at levels that some third world countries would perhaps be ashamed of.

Because if you look around closely, you will see tons of spoiled people who get ANYHTING they want. People in third world countries are lucky to be wearing shoes. They have a hard time surviving, they get poor food and poor water, which is bad for your health obviously. As they rot away, we are soaking in luxury, foods to our hearts content, and stuff we do not need at all. Like posters, fancy jewelery, useless stuff. And to make it worse millions of americans are so fat, its an insult. People in other countries could be using the food much more than we need it. We have plenty!

The only reason that the world hates the US is because you make yourself stand out so much. Other countries are hated just as much, or more, but keep a low profile. Going into illegal and impossible to win wars really doesn't help the situation. BTW, America, contrary to popular belief, did NOT win WWII.

I probably know way too little about the country in general, but for me, it's the fact that American presidents throughout history (especially Bush, but he's not alone) have responded to threats with force, rather than dialogue and compromises. Another problem (and this one may be too biased, I admit), is when I hear americans talk about bio fuel and alternative energy sources, their primary conern is the prize and how far you can go per liter/gallon, not that it might actually help stabilze the global environment. It's probably not true, but through the media, it looks like the country's population and government are completely ignorant towards the environmental problems we face. And I'm not only talking about global warming here, it's pollution of the seas, extinction of species, oil drilling in Alaska etc. as well. (sorry for the weird English ><, hope you get my point)

the world doesn't hate the U.S. at all we just sit back and shake our heads in disbelief at some of the half arsed things it does and the total hypocrisy that it sprouts at times ...while the U.S. is a great country its seems to love to turn a blind eye to its many many faults

Vietnam!Iraq!Afghanistan(I'm for the war in Afghanistan but not everyone is) Just the general approach of the US's foreign policies . To use Vietnam as an example since I have already mentioned it. You are supposedly the home of democracy yet you funded a dictatorial minority government in south Vietnam after funding colonialists before. Then refused to allow the population a democratic vote since it would mean the communists winning. where the hell is the democracy in that. Plus at the moment the US is seen as one of the key reasons for the economic downturn. Just a few of the top of my head. Although I personally don't hate the US after all you are our oversized younger brother.

We have a lot of loud asses that are very ignorant that give the rest of us a bad name. They are for everything if they don't have to do anything and/or it doesn't cost or inconvenience them. In addition, we treat people in foreign countries like they are second class people. I have seen it in lots of tourist. They may live in a 3rd world country, but that doesn't mean the are second or third class as a person.

The rest of the world does not hate the United States. Some people in the world resent the US, because the unsuccessful nearly always find a way to blame their plight on something outside of themselves. It is easy to forget that there is a worker in India or China right now who once was doomed to a short peasant existence, but who now has a factory job and is being paid with money that comes from wealth produced in the US. I have had the opportunity (or not depending on how you see it) to be in parts of the world that you imagine hate the US. They do not. It is just the opposite. They live with the fear that if the US goes down, there will be no more hope for them or anyone else for that matter. I think they are correct.

You cant generalize the whole of 6 or 7 billion people or all the 200 countries hate U.S. I also think its not fair if we expect middle east or some more contries to praise or love us. Thats just not gonna happen till U.S stop what it is doing there.

Not everyone hates the United States. There is, however, bad feeling in many countries that have been at the wrong end of American foreign policy. All countries at some time in history have tried to manipulate other governments but supporting opposition or just plain invading them on the pretence of saving the civilians from them. Usually the real reason is to take/control resources. Most recently the resource in question is oil. As the US is the highest consumer of oil, and doesn't look like it's trying to change, you can see why people think they are just waging war for their own greed. Coupled together with their fondness of "friendly fire" and "Gung-ho" approach to shooting anything that moves, I can't say I blame them.

That is not true, everyone does not hate the United States. There are an awful lot of people from around the world very keen to come and live there which would hardly be the case if it was universally hated.

They don't. They just listen to our news broadcasts and watch our movies and assume that they know what we are all about. Additionally, their elected officials can score cheap points by sneering. For so many countries it costs them nothing to bite the hand that feeds them.

As far as I can see the USA are the most beloved and the most admired country in the world. Americans are widely regarded as people from an extremely superior type and with the highest standards of education and humanity. America is the most special and most outstanding nation in the world and therefore extremely superior to the rest of uncivilized and underdevelopped inferior countries. I regard of its ultimate superiority to any other nation in the world every American is part of superior kind of human being, extremely superior to all kind of lower people. I think the rest of the world has very well understood the American superiority and so I can only see admiration and no hatred at all. America is the country with the highest admiration in the whole world. The rest of world loves America and its people because you do not find better and superior people as in America.

No we don't, I'm a Brit and have travelled, do not assume that Government to Government trouble reflects the attitude of the people, I've been to Iran and many other places that are meant to be unfriendly and got a great reception (and witnessed this going to Americans as well). Find out for yourself.

That's not really realistic, you can say you hate a politician running the country, but not really the people, people are kept in the dark about most things.

I don't think it's true that everyone hates the U.S. (see our many fairly dedicated allies), but...I think the motive behind those who hate the United States is basically the same as those who hate successful people (and like to see successful people fail).
