The F-105 Thunderchief and later, the F-106 Delta Dart became the interceptors, and in theory the XF-98 Rapier, which was also cancelled. Americans favored heavy planes with a lot of fuel and payload capacity (for massive nuclear bombs), so the Cold War theatre was designed around the B-52B with a fighter squadron of F-4v2 Phantoms and the 106 as a wing interceptor. The Arrow would never have worked, it was too fast for this type of scenario.
