I writer gets either a flat rate,or more usually a percentage of the movies revenues. If the movies makes a lot of profit the writer does well.If it flops the writer gets very little.I am not sure of the exact amount of the royalties. The issues that the writer has with the producers is that the script is altered to suit the movie and the writer does not have much say in the matter.

It's a difficult question to answer because there are so many different deals that writers may be offered. Many of them also work as "script doctors," attempting to change scripts to suit directors or studios; for instance, studio management may have a complaint that the motivations of the characters are unclear or that the dialogue is weak. Script-doctoring can be quite lucrative, especially for the better known writers. In fact, some writers make very profitable careers out of the script doctoring food chain, being the ninth or tenth writer to work on a piece; in many cases, working on projects that never see exposure to an audience of any size. Many screenwriters may also find work by selling a "treatment", or synopsis, of their screenplay even if it isn't completed yet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screenwriter
