As I'm already married, it would not be my personal choice, but I know plenty of other people who have gone decades with the same partner and no marriage. Clearly it works for some people and not for others.

FoolsParadiseLong-distance relationships can be challenging, but they are possible under the right circumstances. I was in a relationship that went long-distance for over two years. Ultimately, it ended in a break-up, but I did gain some perspective that I can hopefully share with you now. Before trying to determine if it's worth it to try long-distance, I urge you to consider if the conditions are right for the relationship to survive it at all. First and foremost, the relationship should be serious and well-established. To withstand the distance, you really need a strong foundation of time and shared experiences. New or casual relationships are fun, but having almost no chance in this scenario. Next, you should consider needs, both of you and your partner. Consider what you get out of the relationship, (physically, emotionally, etc). Can these needs set aside or at least temporarily replaced with a healthy alternative? Finally, and probably the most important thing to consider is the length of the separation. It's easy to boldly proclaim that love conquers all, but for how long? Do you have a finite window of time in mind? If the answer to all three of these questions is "yes", the only left is whether or not your partner is worth the fight. My relationship did not survive the distance, due mainly to an indefinite period of separation. It happens...but I can tell you that I've been married almost twenty years to the same amazing woman and, for her, I would absolutely be willing to do it again.

Why not? I know unmarried couples who are still together after 25-30 years & I know many people who have divorced after much shorter marriages so it could be argued the former have shown greater commitment to each other. It's about the people involved, how they feel about each other & whether they feel the need for a certificate & a ring.
