What is gated reverb and why is it making a comeback?
My friend (who couldn't explain it) said it was the sound of the 80s and now it's all over current music.

Well, if you apply a gated reverb to a snare drum, you will get a sort of echo which cuts off quickly, instead of gradually. Reminds me of "Close to the Edit" (Art of Noise) from the 80s.
