  • Quite a few things. One example was how he handled the so-called "Whisky Rebellion." Grain farmers were upset about a federal tax on their goods, so they revolted. Washington's cabinet insisted that he gather a federal army and suppress the rebellion by force, but Washington refused until all diplomatic options were exhausted. When he did take action, he marched with the men himself, and pardoned the rebels after they were sentenced to death. No other sitting PotUS has marched with troops into battle since then.
  • Another example is that Washington declared Thanksgiving as a national holiday, in order to promote cultural unity. Every Thanksgiving, Washington himself fasted, whilst personally giving food to the hungry.

  • Also, and I know it's probably talked about a lot, but Washington introduced the idea of an executive cabinet - people he trusted as true experts within their fields. When he disagreed with his own cabinet members, rather than over-rule them, he simply discussed his concerns with them and still ultimately let the cabinet member make the decision. Of course, the people chosen for cabinet positions were all people who had already spent years earning Washington's trust, and were all intensely loyal. Even then, the cabinet members often disagreed with each other, which led to the first schism of US politics.
