The typical or Standard installation installs those portions of the OS that the company thinks it is most likely you will need and use. The Customized installation allows you to select for yourself which items to install. For example, Mac OS will normally install drivers for a bunch of printers by a number of manufacturers. That way, when a user buys a new printer about all that they have to do is plug it into the computer. However, it also takes up extra space on the hard drive to store a bunch of printer drivers that the user is likely to never need. So, when I install the OS on my computer, I choose the custom install option and tell the installer to only install the drivers for the brand of printer that I am actually using. There are other things of this nature that you can also do when you customize an installation.

Pretty large or nothing at all depending on your setup, If you have custom hardware or some specialized hardware then "custom" lets you install it. Otherwise it installs whatever it detects and has drivers for.
