<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Spring Planting Is Usually Best for Wisconsin
There are many species of poppies. Most can be planted in either early spring or late fall, though the seeds of even the hardiest poppies may not survive the harsh Wisconsin winter. The cold will definitely kill the seeds of popular mild-weather species like the California poppy. Therefore, to ensure the germination of poppy seeds in Wisconsin, early spring planting is required.
On the Other: Some Poppies Can Survive Fall Planting
Some of the hardier species, like the opium poppy, may germinate after fall planting even in colder climates. Furthermore, gardening expert Jim Long reports that poppies can be planted successfully in the late fall or early winter in some parts of the Midwest.
Bottom Line
In Wisconsin, poppy seeds produce the best results if planted in the early spring. They can be planted in the fall as well, but there's no guarantee that they will germinate the following year.
