Sclerotherapy is a cosmetic procedure used since the 1930s to treat non-painful varicose and spider veins. A solution is injected into the vein that causes the vein to inflame and stick together, fading away as it turns into scar tissue.
Definition
Compression stockings are specialty hose designed to apply graduated pressure on the leg, highest around the ankle. This decreases venous pressure and can relieve aching, tired legs.
Duration
The website of Charlotte Radiology Vein and Vascular Center recommends wearing compression stockings for two weeks after sclerotherapy. For the first three days, they must be worn at all times, but afterward can be removed for showers.
Purpose
The American Academy of Dermatology says compression stockings are recommended after sclerotherapy because they can help to seal the veins and keep blood from pooling under the skin. They reduce the appearance of dark spots, the number of treatments needed and the recurrence of spider veins.
Warning
Department store stockings will not suffice; heavy compression stockings are needed and can be recommended or prescribed by a doctor. These stockings will cost $60 to $100 and can be purchased at a medical supply store with a prescription or supplied to you by your doctor.
Tips
Compression stockings are used as a primary treatment for varicose and spider veins before sclerotherapy is considered. They are a great way to prevent varicose and spider veins, especially for those who spend a lot of time standing.
