I think I've read that there are billions. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Observable_universe#Matter_content and http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/oct98/905633072.As.r.html , there are more than 80 billion galaxies in the observable universe.

The current number is believed to be of the order of 10^11 i.e. 100,000,000,000. Since each galaxy contains about the same number of stars, it is a very big place indeed. And that is only the bits we can see.
