It's not all that common (these days) but not incredibly rare. I used to sing in a male chorus that numbered up to 200, and there were usually 1 or 2 other people with the same first name - unlike the 14-20 Jim/James/Jimmy people we usually had each season. lol
-
My user name is my real name. I would say it isn't nearly as common as it was when I was given it.

-
I'd say "Rip" is quite uncommon. Quite proud of the fact, actually. ----------edit------------- Found these statistics at http://www.pokemyname.com: * RIP is ranked the 68322nd name in USA. * One in every 702,203 Americans are named RIP. * The popularity of the name RIP is 1.42 people per million. * If we compare the popularity statistics of RIP to USA's population statistics, we can estimate that as of September 29, 2009 (00:46), there are 438 people named RIP in the United States and the number of RIP's are increasing by 4 people every year. * Usage of rip as a first name is much more common than its usage as a middle name. The sum of alphabetical order of letters in RIP is 43 and this makes RIP arithmetic buddies with words like Amiable, Coy, Hot, Regal.

People call me by my middle name rather than my first. My first name is the same as my mother's, and it was common in her generation. No one names little girls Ruth now - but I think it's a rather PRETTY name even though an old name - it's infinitely preferable to Olive and Myrtle and Edna and Gladys and Ethel and Beulah and Mabel and Mamie and Hilda. (Forgive me if someone precious to you bears any of these names?)

It isn't really common, but neither is it really rare either. I don't know anyone else with it, though I have known a couple over my lifetime, so it isn't too common, and it can be spelt three ways and mine isn't the most common spelling so that makes it a little rarer too.
