I gotta have both. If I couldn't play on both instruments, I would really be missing the other one. I also play a steel stringed (Martin) acoustic guitar, which is a third category you didn't mention, but I gotta keep going on it as well!

Electric is more expensive and needs an amplifier. However its easier to strum and if you put your fingers close to, but not on - the strings, it still still plays. It doesn't mute like folk guitars do. This is important if you play a lot of barre chords. You also need it to play Rock. Classical can be taken anywhere but is less forgiving of mistakes, and can be a lot cheaper. You decide. What are your needs?

Electric. My dad played electric guitar so I'm partial.

I prefer the sound of acoustic, but electric is easier to play, not so hard on your fingers.
