I have a suburban. About ten years ago I ripped out the back seats (actually I just undid the nuts and removed them) built in a frame raising the back bed almost 12 inches. Where the passenger leg wells are (for the seat directly behind the front) I have about 18 inches of up and down storage, divided with one side having a handy shelf unit cut to hold things like circular saw, drills, blah. Drawers for hand tools like my set of screwdrivers, crescent wrenches, etc. Behind that the 'floor' lifts up (hinged) revealing three compartments. Those are for storage of things like pain supplies, sand papers, sanders, blah. The top has been dived up - the front part is all hinged, the back 48 inches can be completely removed for hauling of taller things. The area usually holds my folding saw horses, extension cords and other 'flat things'. I have nearly all of my hand tools and power tools in the truck. On either side of the wheel wells I have compartments that hold containers of screws, nails, nuts, bolts, washers, plumbing washers, and the like. I can haul a 10' long stick of wood, or ply wood or dry wall. and still hold all of my tools beneath. I cut and finished carpet to fit on the new 'floor' for the dog.
