  • It symbolises a gesture of peace. Edit: I felt I should elaborate to make the answer more helpful. The dove is a symbol of peace, but where the olive branch comes into it (and this may not be 100% accurate) is that after the Great Flood, Noah sent a dove out to search for land that would be safe for them to travel to and live on. The dove came back with an olive branch in it's beak, which apparently symbolised the end of God's war with mankind.
