I'm afraid I have always used a hammer and a flat chisel. Be sure to wear eye protection! If this is on drywall you're going to have some repair work to do.

Use a heat gun, takes longer but there is no mess. When you pull off each tile, the cement will be soft under it and can easily be scraped off as well.

Get a sledge hammer & break it up into pieces, then get a shovel & scrape it up.

Yep I've used the hammer and chisel WITHOUT eye protection and ALMOSt chipping your eyeball with flying ceramic shrapnel is not nice. Go get those groovy safety glasses on...
