  • First use was Port Outbound Starboard Home used by passenger ship passengers to describe their cabin locations aboard ship, I think by British passengers to book a trip to India. Today it generally means expensive and upscale.
  • The commenters are correct...Port Out starboard Home...It also has the notion that both England and India are north of the equator. And the sun is mainly over the equator...So when passengers were leaving England, they would bo on the side of the ship AWAY FROM the sun. And the reverse when returning to England...This was considered necessary by English ladies who constantly protected themselves from direct sunlight to preserve their "peaches and cream" complexions.
