Four is what I use now, but I don't see why three wouldn't work.

Tines. Our everyday forks have four, but our formal forks have three. I like the three better.

I don't recall using many forks with three TINES... except for grilling forks, pickle forks, and gardening forks. I like four.

The number of tines is irrelevant. But at least one of them MUST be bent. (And how the heck do people DO this, for crying out loud? Bad overbite? Pick their teeth? Dig in their garden? Sheesh!)
