A manifold is usually a device whitch takes fluid (gaseous or liquid) input from one source and distributes it to several destinations, or takes input from several sources and delivers it to one destination. Often it is just a box or pipe with several holes in it, connected to your source(s) and destination(s). The intake manifold distributes fresh air or fuel/air mixture from the throttle body (or intercooler, or other device between the throttle and the manifold) to the intake valves of the cylinders. Some of these are just air-tight boxes made to fit on the engine with holes in the right places. Some, especially in high-performance engines, are carefully shaped and tuned to provide free flow and optimum pressure at the valve when it opens.
