It's a myth.

There is no evidence to suggest mermaids are real, and I would suggest that mermaids in the sense you are probably thinking of are highly unlikely to exist. If you subscribe to the theory of evolution humans are a higher and more advanced lifeform than sea life, there is no conceivable evolutionary advantage to a creature half human, half fish. Human bodies - lungs and skin inparticular, are not designed for a life under water, particularly salt water. However, the ocean is a big place, much of it unexplored, and the possibility of mermaid-like creatures, which may have been seen by sailors at various times is not out of the question- although it is unlikely that they would be humanoids or on the same evolutionary scale as humans so that we would be able to communicate on any meaningful level. After being at sea for several months, minus female company, sexually frustrated, tired and at times very drunk, its hardly surprising if the wishful thinking of weary imaginations turned distant dolphins and manatees (who have very human-like faces) into beautiful fish-tailed women. Some manatees embracing in a strangely human manner: http://www.idiyachts.com/images/manatees%20in%20Boot%20Key%20II.JPG There are also groups of so called sea-nomads and sea gypsies, living around the far-flung coasts of Thailand and Indonesia. Whilst these people are as human as you or I, they spend a large percentage of their lives in water, have a diet consisting mainly of fish, and can hold their breath underwater for suprising amounts of time. http://www.kolantamagazine.com/artman/publish/article_37.shtml These people are often perceived as "fishlike" and its possible that, whilst human, these communities are very close to the real-life equivalent of the mermaids of legend.
-
Nope. Mermaids are NOT real. Most (or some) people are mistaken by that. When they see a Sea Cow (A.K.A Dugong), they thought it was a mermaid...
-
found in the philippines adead body of a merman.
-
NO, they are fictional characters.
-
Only in my dreams
-
In the minds of children. But in the real world, no. Just a non fictional thing created to amuse & occupy our minds
-
You ever go to the acqubar at Hooters where the bar maids have to wear flipper outfits? They are alerted with a Siren every time a cutomer approaches.
-
They are real in fantasy books. There haven't been any reports lately about real mermaids. They have been dated back, as far as 5000 BC. Most known in Greek Mythology. Theory has it that manatees and dugongs have been mistaken as mermaids, for their appearances. Look more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mermaids

~~coelocanths HAD to be extinct... then 'we' found one in 1938. ~~no creature could live in a volcanic vent on the ocean floor.... 1977 'we' photographed an entire community of new creatures who thrive in those conditions. ~~Rogue waves were myths... they could never happen. They were just stories fabricated by sailors.... 1995 an oil rig's sensors record one. ~~giant squid were only a myth; no such creature could exist.... September 2004 'we' caught a live one on camera. So, based on this I have to say that I don't think it is out of the question. Do we have evidence? No. However, how much do we 'really' know about our oceans? Things relagated to be strictly mythical have been proven before. Are they real? We don't know. Have people seen them? Stories date back very many years and exist in most cultures. If they do exist, yes, people surely have seen them. For now it is only a myth, and it will be until... well until a scientist locks one up. Until we can fully study one and determine it's authenticity. I am not saying they 'do' exist; I am only saying 'we' have been wrong before. I don't think we should totally deny any possibilities. Typically merpeople are depicted as half-human-half fish. However, just because the creature resembled a human doesn't mean it wasn't a strangely evolved fish. I don't believe that dugongs or manatees fit the bill. They don't look human. We just haven't gotten to the real root of it yet. Are mermaids mythical or real? Mythical.... until we discover something that says otherwise.
-
Very, Very Unlikely.
-
I truly hope so. I loved that movie with Cher! Surely you would know seeing how your name is bubble.
-
No.
-
No, but i wouldn't surprised if a "real" mermaid pic came out on the net sooner or later. Hell, probably there's already one around.
-
Yes , I went out with one once . She left me when I bought fish and chips home one night . I felt such an idiot 'cos I really liked her.
-
Mermaids and Mermen is just like anything else you may or may not believe in such as ghost and other crazy things. No one person can say for sure that they do not exist because there is no proof that they don't.If someone says that they have or thought they might have seen a figure in the sea that looked like a human-half fish who are you to say that it is not true. I am a believer in all sorts of thing, like, ghost and i almost believe in mer people because it is an exciting thing just to think it is or could be possible........

Honestly, what are fictional characters but something derived from a person's perspective or imagination? Half of the stories, art, and crafts that have been made are purely putting together things you've seen in your lifetime and your mind putting the pieces together. (The exceptions of people piecing things together, are Nostradamus and Da Vinci who used mathematics and physics to piece together our modern helicopter and various other crafts we use today.) Some people may have been delusional, but it takes one person believing something out of the 'norm' to be crazy. I haven't heard just one mermaid story, so I don't think that's the case. Our technology to explore depths of more than 3 miles is very...primitive. Blue Planet even INFORMED viewers that LESS than 1% of our deep oceans have been explored. What does that tell you? Lack of evidence. Picture going down the ocean three miles and then what? Pick a direction. What in the world do you think YOU'D find? Remember, 75% of our planet is covered by water. What are the odds that you WOULDN'T run into a 'mermaid' or a variation of a humanoid aquatic creature? The scientists that went down in Alvin discovered brand new species, hybrids, and even older versions of the species we see today (ie; the six-gilled shark). Until evidence is brought forth that mermaids absolutely DO NOT EXIST, I will continue believing humanoid hybrids of some sort of aquatic creature isn't impossible. However, the disheartening fact is that maybe I won't be around when they do have it. That's sad.
-
No. How would they relieve themselves? Their legs are permanently shut.
-
nope--sorry
-
Well its hard to say there real or fake cause the world is so weird that we still dont know whats out in the ocean or land so its hard to explain if its real or not.
-
this is the closest to a mermaid I could find.
-
I would love to see one and I like to think they are real but the odds aren't great.
-
I swam with one in the ocean near Seattle, she didn't tell me her name though....I know they are for real
-
things are being discovered in the ocean all the time. i was watching a programme on tv and theres a machine that goes really deep down where no human can go and has discovered lots of things that we didnt even know existed. so yes it is possible
-
I don't believe anyone can truly say if they are real or not ,and if they exist they would not look half woman and half fish.Mankind has not yet found all the creatures that exist in the oceans or on land,so just because they have not been caught it is pretty close minded to think that such a thing could not exist.
-
No. If they are real so is the Loch Nest Monster :-)
-
I would love to see a real one or believe that they are real ... but i cant !
-
mermaids are real because i am one!!!
-
Yes they live in a pool in the forest where the centaurs live.
-
Yes look at my pic. She must be real
-

-
i highly doubt it, but then again, i dont think we've (as in humans) have ever been to the deepest parts of the ocean...
-
Yes the mermen and mermaids are real. Many people might have evolved from them. How would you explain the home sickness that some people have twords the sea? But the merfolk are too smart for cameras and they have been cast out in human society for hundreads of years hence hardly any reported sightings. They are a small populated race of beautiful quiet beings that dwell in the northern atlantic and surrounding seas. I should know because I was one once.
-
No they are not real. They are only myths.
-
The most detailed account from the Weekly World News, recorded a mermaid being caught in a fishing net off of the coast of Florida on April 17, 2004. She was at least half-human, very sociable, and extremely intelligent. The mermaid measured five feet from the tip of her upturned nose to the end of her spiny, translucent tail. Experts which talked with WWN reporters say she was able to talk in a sophisticated "three dimensional language" that depends heavily on noises that could possibly be connected to the "click languages" prevalent in parts of Africa and on hand movements that look like sign language instructed to deaf people around the globe. A linguist who had spent several hours with the mermaid at an undisclosed marine study facility in Florida declared that once they are able to establish communication, everything known about human evolution, the specialness of human intelligence, everything thought about fish - "It's all going out the door". Four government agencies (at least) were reported as if involved in the care and study of the mermaid, including the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of the Interior; the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Institutes of Health. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weekly_World_News http://www.thefeejeemermaid.com/gallery4.htm http://www.thefeejeemermaid.com/index.htm http://www.search.com/search?q=mermaid+captured&nav=1.10.4.10 http://www.search.com/search?q=Mermaid+Sightings
-
They're real only in fiction.
-
No, thank goodness. How frustrating that would be, having a beautiful girlfriend with the lower half of a mackarel.
-
NO
-
Thats like asking if big foot's real; Depending on any particular person's opinion, beliefs etc. you're going to get different answers. Perhaps the most common answer is that no, they do not in fact exist. But I'm sure there would be those wiling to argue. Actually, this may sound rather insane, but I'm convinced that when I was younger, I a dead mermaid thrown over a hill in my back yard. There were blue/green metalic scales, a disgusting stench, a patch of blue skin, and long shiny blue hair piled in a huge mass on top of the thing. Really, It could have been something else entirely and my childhood mind was jumping to conclusions, but the memory is quite vivid. Though I could also just be insane, which is pretty likley as well. :]
-
NO
-
i think they are and they arent just in the ocean. a man found one by a lake in utah it was stuck between two big rocks when they openned the dam. it wasnt pretty but it had long blonde hair it had sharp teeth and long nails it look pretty ugly.
-
They usually don't lie.
-
YES
-
yes there is a possibility that they are real. i lived in the uk but moved to america now my whole live has changed. i went swimminsg and then saw this shadow beneath me it was a mermaid tali. i dont know whos it was but then it dissapeared. . when i spotted the tail after 10 seconds it had gone, 2 weeks later i saw it again. i visited miami for the day and went swimming and saw it again. my 2 best friends came in the water and they saw 2 more beneath them. i am going swimming in 2 days and my 2 best friends are coming . i wonder if well see themm again if we do ill be shocked. something could be happening.
-
Mermaids were the sea lions spotted by very horny and nutrient-deprived sailors in previous centuries. They would see them from their ships at a distance and think they looked like women. Plus, that probably hadn't seen a woman in ages, so their imaginations would be playing up.
-
The image of the called beautiful women depicted in the images of art are highly unlikely. a mammal with human features and a tail could very well exist, though have no personal proof of so.Scientists are finding new species in the seas every day and it is possible to allude mankind if such a species choose to.Obviously many creatures have eluded mankind or we would not be finding them till this day. In this following sight is the remains of a merman.http://www.thefeejeemermaid.com/
-
I have no solid proof that they do NOT exist, as we have not yet explored every depth of every sea. Thus, I cannot rule out their existence. ^_^

"Mermaids: Real or Not" : I've got two ideas on that: (This is a little long, sry, just alot to say, with a few ideas of my own, right or wrong, just the way I beleive, about 'the supernatural', or TRY to believe!) Just thought I'd share them with u. Make up ur OWN minds! (Here we go, lol!) : 1. Creationism: Interesting too, that many people think GOD is a myth, since we've never seen him or an Angel. But we celebrate, and JUST CELEBRATED, "Christmas". Why? Because we WANT to believe, I think! And yet, ppl keep believing in him. Why? What proof do U have that God exists, and what proof do U have that he doesn't? Face it, if someone says that they have had convos with or met God, or saw an Angel, or ARE God or Jesus or an Angel, or went to Heaven, and then brought back a message "from God" to ppl, or etc., u'd think they were NUTS, and THROW them in the LOONEY BIN! Course' that would be right before UR about to go to CHURCH! It just happenned to be on the Sunday Morning News, Early Edition. And you say, "Nutty PPl thinking they're talking to God? PFFT! TSK! IDIOTS!" That is, right before U tell UR kids, "Don't forget ur Bibles, and to say ur prayers, God listens to all 'his' children. Make a wish, be a good person, believe in God, and u MAY get ur wish, and get to go to Heaven! But don't talk to strange ppl, who say they've MET God, ok Kids? They're just WEIRD!!" See what I'm saying? Double Standard! No one has any PROOF God, Heaven, Jesus, Angels, Satan, "the bad place", etc exist, and yet, ppl believe anyway, just on "Faith", on a feeling. And no one has any proof they DON'T EXIST! It's just what ppl believe, until Science PROVES it, one way or another, if they can. (OR unless we DO find out someday, on "Judgement Day". Not saying it exists or not, just saying...keep an open mind. Who knows? (But I bet God DOES exist! :)) We won't know...til we know. But that goes for ALL things! :)) So why can't ppl have a 'feeling' OTHER 'sensational, paranormal' things exist, too? No one thru history believed Dinosaurs existed, tales of HUGE lizards who ruled the Earth, millions of years ago, until they died out from "a fire from the Heavens."...that IS, until we STARTED finding FOSSILS, and found out they DID exist, and died out PROBABLY from a huge Meteor! Now theyre EVERYWHERE, in museums, Movies, Sat. morning tv and toys, real life in various ways, etc. I think they just found several NEW species of dinosaur, from what Ive read recently.) And, they say "Nessie" might be a Dinosaur that got trapped by, and protected from, the meteor. Least thats what I've always heard. Who knows. Just a thought.) And aren't lizards, reptils, turtles, snakes, Kimodo Dragons, birds, fish, other animals, etc, SUPPOSED to be EVOLVED from dinosaurs? Some, anyway. (Truthfully, not sure how THAT works, lol, big to small, lol, but that's what scientists say, I think!) And we're ALWAYS finding out new species of animal and plant life, on land...AND the oceans...(if we don't destroy the world and KILL OFF all the species, first, including and ESPECIALLY, US!!)...and we've explored MORE of land than we have of the OCEANS! So if we KEEP finding more things on land, when we've been here a LONG time, isn't it POSSIBLE we could find things in the OCEAN, which we havent REALLY explored at ALL? So if its possible that God DOES exist, when we have NO proof, isn't it also possible that Mermaids, Ghosts, Dinosaurs, Bigfoot, Vampires, Nessie, Aliens, UFO's, etc, exist, and are ALL God's creatures too, when we ALSO have no proof? Kindof the same thing, almost, the way I see it. Don't u think? Maybe? WE'RE God's creatures, if he def does exist. Right? That's what MOST people on Earth believe, whatever religion u happen to be, when we HAVE NO PROOF. Can't THEY be God's creatures too, ones God created to live among us too, just ones we havent found yet, and are SEPARATED from us somehow? And I'm not ATTACKING, ANYONE'S Religion or beliefs! Promise! It's just theories! And I'm not an Agnostic, or Athiest. And I'm also not a definite Christian. Sortof in the middle. I'm just a regular guy, who's partly Christian, because I was raised that way, but also partly not. I just havent decided WHAT I believe yet. But I'm working on it. I kindof believe in almost everything, and that maybe everything is connected, we just have to figure out how. (But I probably AM more Christian, than not, just to let u know. And I STILL believe these things.) But I RESPECT religions, AND sensational stories, (except in tabloids, lol! I'm not THAT nutty, lol!), BC, until I see it with my own two eyes, personally, accurately, without a doubt, then it's hard to believe. BUT, I STILL believe it's POSSIBLE, all things, we just havent FOUND them yet, that's all. Doesn't mean we WON'T someday! We just havent' YET! But it DOESN'T mean we won't. I'm not saying ANYTHING 'supernatural' DOES exist...but I'm also not saying it DOESN'T! It's a HUGE world out there, and we've ONLY BARELY scratched the surface! So who knows WHAT exists? And talk about SPACE? We haven't even STARTED YET! So who's to say WHAT'S out THERE? Just theories, just thoughts, that's all. "Everything's possible, until PROVEN impossible." A motto I made up some years ago. Just MY thoughts. Make up ur own minds. (But I bet u God DOES exist, along with everything else! :)) Just a thought... 2. Evolution: They say that if we didn't come from God, then we evolved from 'apes'. At least that's the theory I've always heard. Maybe there's another, better theory, don't know. But if that's true, if we are offshoots of apes, couldn't bigfoot be an offshoot too, that never evolved, but still continued to exist? And if true too, couldn't other "supernatural monsters/beings" be offshoots of humanity that never evolved, but continued to exist, too? Including "Mermaids"? Or maybe that's the way they're SUPPOSED TO BE, just to make the world a little "cooler"! (Besides, who WOULDN'T want to see HOT, HALF-NAKED WOMEN, swimming in the ocean and singing beautiful songs? Granting wishes? Dates?! ;) LOL! I know I'D love it! LOLOL! :))And maybe if THAT'S true, ppl growing so out of control in the world, land, sea and air (planes and stuff), pollution, hunting, noise, populations, wars and bombs, famine, disease, and everything else that affects PPL, that could ALSO be affecting 'monsters', maybe to a WORSE degree, esp. man-made stuff, maybe even killing them off, (*ahem* "global warming, war, and pollution, anyone?*)), etc., caused the 'monsters' to be pushed to secluded areas, forests/caves/depths/volcanos/etc, whatever they may be, around the world, for survival, and out of fear, and they stay hidden from ppl as much as possible. And maybe THAT'S WHY we just havent been lucky enough to find any yet, living or dead, for a VARIETY of reasons! But it doesn't mean we WON'T! They say truth is STRANGER than fiction! So who knows WHAT'S out there? Who knows what we'll find? And when? Ya, alot of things dont add up about legends, and also there are ppl with hoaxes. Plus ppl faking Ufos, etc. (Not to mention 'tabloids', lol!) So all of that confusing info, and LIMITED info, and LIES, messes us up, so we dont know WHAT to believe! But who knows? All I can say is, just BELIEVE its POSSIBLE, EVERYTHING, and keep searching for answers, in ACCURATE WAYS, and HOPEFULLY someday we'll HAVE some answers! (Hopefully, someday soon, bc that would be COOL, lol!) We just dont have them YET! But it doesn't mean we WON'T soon! We're just NOW discovering Stem Cells, which could solve ALOT of health probs, if they work, and correctly, and USED correctly. Thats only been now, not even in LAST CENTURY. Not much, anyway. So who's to say WHAT we'll discover in the 21st? And beyond? Science, Medicine, Zoology, Religion, Technology, Space, CryptoZoology, ALIENS, etc. We have no idea. We won't know...til we know. "Mulder: "I WANT to believe!" Just remember one word..."maybe"....
-
I believe in them. I think that, like all mythological creatures, they only exist if people believe in them. So, yes, I believe that one day when I'm on vacation swimming in the ocean, I will spot and make friends with a mermaid who will give me some sort of breathing apparatus and take me to her underwater castle and show me all her mermaid friends. They'll ask me to keep them secret, and I'll agree because it'll make it even more special.
-
In stories, legends, and novels, yes they are very real. And so are selkies:-)
-
Many people believe that mermaids were actually manatees, dugongs, and (now extinct) sea cows. Christopher Columbus even believed in mermaids and recorded his own mermaid sighting in the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus reported seeing three mermaids in the ocean off of Haiti in January of 1493. He reported that they "came quite high out of the water", but were "not as pretty as they are depicted, for somehow in the face they look like men." (Cherry, 1995.) The "mermaids" described by Columbus were almost certainly manatees. A short video: http://www.history.com/media.do?id=tdih_jan09_broadband&action=clip
-
Why not? We have Bigfoot and NUMEROUS UFO sightings, so why do humans' have a big ego to think nothing else like us could exsist?
-
no. its all bullshit.
-
well, there has been sightings of mermaids all around the world.Sailors who have come into contact with mermaids say that they have long hair and a fish tail with no scales.Go the google.ca and type in mermaid sightings and you will have resolts.
-
G'day Sunglisten2, Thank you for your question. No as much as I would like to. Regards
-
i dont know if they are real but i truly believe in them. i believe that they have a home deep deep deep deeep deeep down in the ocean where no scuba diver, submarine or anything can go that deep to notice it, some say im crazy some say im weird but my friends stick with me and they believa as well..now that we know that santa claus is not real(we learned that 3 years ago) we have something else to believe in..MERMAIDS!!!!!!.they are our true passion now so even if u dont believe try to and u may pick up some facts that can showu that there's little hope in if they are living..<3 bye..hope you've found somethingto believe in...sincerely true believer
-
mermaids are real. the only reason i say that is because i saw this link http://youtube.com/watch?v=xWFvdfYoyG8&feature=related
-
No one can really tell how true they are. Mermaids remain a mystery even how many thousands of years the earth will exist. A human, how we develop in a mother's womb, has a detailed scientific explanation but how a human came into existence... we don't know. The human evolution has always been vague. Also, a mystery. Everything that moves in this world, that has life, will always remain a question and can only be answered by one creator. Our God, your God. Now, only our belief will stay true if we find believing in them or not. I, myself have always wondered about a mermaid’s existence. I would want to believe so because if we exist, then anything else can exist, too. We only know our world. There are other dimensions in this universe we don’t know may exist. We only know of what we are familiar of. Even a sailorman’s imagination may have a point of origin. I would want to imagine a real mermaid not as how see them in movies or in pictures. Could be that a mermaid may have face of a human but the body and skin is like the whales or dolphins. Mermaids may have different forms of skin and body. For sure a human skin will never be able to dwell long enough under the deep sea. Who can really how they look like. I will just keep on wondering how they may really look like.
-
There are pictures of them online!!! People said they have seen them!!! I belive in them!!! But the pictures might be fake u never know!!!!
-
hi it is cleo from h2o just add water mermaids are real because i am one if you dont belive me go to mako islad and you will see
-
are you being sarcastic or somthing anonymous?
-
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a mermaid when I touch water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I'm not sure but this hoax tricked a lot of people: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/malaysian-mermaid.html It's actually something done by an artist. I know there is a birth defect where infants can be born with their legs fused together. It's extreamly rare, but I think that's about the closest we've ever come to finding an actual mermaid.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5vyC9Inobg At the end of this video, there is allegedly a mermaid skeleton.
-
I know they're a myth or legend. Heck, even manatees have been mistaken as mermaids : )
-
Yes! The little mermaid!! .....Lol, nah...j/k. As far as I know they don't exist...but, I really don't have proof..
-
Hate to burst the bubbhle but having spent 10 years in the NAVY as a small craft MKV boat assault attack boat coxwain I have never seen one and I have gone arround the world 3X but hay hell ya never know
-
Mermaids are as real as you want them to be. I want them to be real cause I think they are cool. I think we have some mermaids at AB. Prove-well I don't have prove that they are real. My question is can someone prove that they are not real?:D)
-
Mermaids can be real as much as unicorns are. I mean how could one say that they don't exist? I mean what if they was one right behind their back? Then right when they turn their back the unicorn follows it? I mean what if it was right outside their house?
-
I never would of believed in mermaids or any other sort of fairytale character but on a recent holiday to Australia I am convinced I saw what could only be described as a mermaid. On the radar on our boat it showed that something the size of a person was right underneath our boat and a few minutes later by husband thought he saw a woman swimming and we were shocked as there were no other boats near by. Then myself and a friend that was also there both saw a large splash and a very long tail disappear under the water. Jus like what you do see in mermaid films. Very strange and also quite scary i thought
-
Flounder and Sebastian seem to think so
-
Don't really know .. but if you have a look at this site you might have your answer .. http://www.scribd.com/doc/325128/Real-Photo-World-Mermaids
-
No. mermaids r not real. We have had enough deep water activity over the past few decades with oil exploration, marine reserch or geotechnical constructions to have seen evidence of them by now. That was a product of a time when the mystery of the sea provided cover for the creativity of valiant story tellers, akin to harp playing cherups above the cloud mat or african moonlight stories of evil forests complete with spirit dances and talking tortoises.
-
Yes. I do believe mermaids are real. Every time I go to the beach I just sit on the sand and stare into the water, hoping for a bright flash of a tail or a family of merpeople who chose me to expose themselves to. Then I go swimming or build a sandcastle.
-
no but its a great thought and little mermaid is awesome!!!!
-
When I was a child yes, but now I now know the truth no
-
I wish and hope they were real... as with lots of other hopes and wishes...they seem to diminish with time(age)..personally I wouldn't mind my life going down in a "splash"(check out the old movie with the same name) it's a blast!
-
im not sure weather to beleive in mermaids or not but there is one thing tht puzzles me is why are dolphins are so friendly towards people even the wild ones. the way i see it (IS THERE SOMETHING IN THE OCEAN THAT LOOK LIKE US FOR DOLPHINS TO RELATE TO US) because its the only animal tht i have ever known to help n save humans n be really friendly yes they can hurt people but the stories i read where they have hurt people they stayed by there side to make sure they get to saftey.
-
Mermaids are as real as fairies. so if you want to see them take some lsd and go swim in the sea.
-
Mermaids do not exist.
-
Marmaids are a myth created from ancient-Hebrew infact, with a god called Dagon whom was half-fish/man Dagon later evolved and became Posieden and Neptune of Greek/roman
-
Yes, I have two down in my pond on the back 40 where I keep my jack-o-lopes!
-
just go to washington dc and visit the national museum of mermaidology.
-
Unfortunately not.
-
I heard that sailors used to think manatees were mermaids. One must spend a long time on a boat to mistake a manatee for a woman...
-
According to Disney they are, but if so, then I want to spend time with Ariel.
-
I wish they were cause then I'd wanna be one LoL :-)
-
why do people think that mermaids are not real but my grandma had a geography book and it was all in their about mermaids and their is this show about mermaids when there in the water they turn into mermaids and when there out of he water than they turn into humans and this mermaid never came out of the water
-
I won't pretend I have all the answers because just when someone thinks they know the answers, something comes along to disprove them. I have yet to see one if they are real. There has never been any positive documented proof that anyone has seen one. But the amazing thing about life is we haven't even touched the surface when it comes to finding new and exciting things, yet to be discovered.
-
Yes, but they're not as pretty as you may think! Manatees and Dugongs are Seagoing Mammals who are seen close to the surface, and are said to hold their calves while nursing them--much as a human mother holds her baby. I suppose that they might look pretty, in a thick fog! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manatee

i do not think they exist, but existed. just humour me for two minutes. there is no smoke without fire. 1.there is no single sea creature that i have seen that i would say i would think would be mistaken for human or partly human. if one does agree that deprivation, may it be sexual or other drove those sailors to see women, then how come there are no other equivalents on land? i mean men who are lost in the desert, on a desert island, in dense forest, men who have to go without food or water or sex for a long period, how come we do not have any such similar stories or accounts for these other situations or circumstances which would put a man in a similar state or frame of mind to see or imagine, may it be part or full, a woman? 2.if we did not have the appropriate technology tools and scientific knowledge, we would never have found creatures such as dinosaurs existed before our times, right or wrong? right. so maybe we do not have the resources to find the proof that they existed. especially because they lived under the sea where it is, i would guess, difficult to go looking fo rmermaid remains. like you wont be able to stumble upon mermaid fossils like some people stumbled on irrefutable proofs that dinosaurs exist. we do not have the means to explore the sea, the seabed and the deapth properly. so we have stories of sightings, but no one can prove that they did not exist. 3.if they did exist, maybe they were on the same line as evolving as humans, but instead of evolving into what we have become, they evolved in a different way. one would certainly agree that the eco system of the planet is constantly changing. so it would not be surprising that thats what happened and that species could not survive for some reason for the last couple of centuries or something like that. maybe their predators increased and they were all eaten by sharks or something!! after all, dolphins were land animals arent they? and now they live only in the sea. back legs disappeared.they got tails. all we have to do is follow the evolutionary process of sea mamals and creature that breathe air. i am open to discussion. i find this subject facinating. however, we did invent stuff like dragons and angels and the like(right!?)...so why not mermaids!?! i think i just love the idea of mermaids because of the way they have been portrayed in films and stuff...so romantic, so misterious, so sexy!! and the implications of all this...who would not want to be able to become a mermaid, or merman and go and explore the sea, be able to breathe underwater, find all the treasures under the sea, unthinkable beauties, swim and able to talk to dolphins, sit on a white whale's back, being able to save sailors, fall in love...endless!!!!! i would like to know anyone who doesnt want these things!!! i think we should keep this legend (or whatever) alive! its too beautiful to let go of...although it portraits perfection, i think we need something like that to day dream about. this world is getting way too ugly.

Weren't those sighting proved to be of walruses or seacows or something? I'm sure I remember hearing that somewhere.

Yes just as the word gullible has been taken out of the dictionary

Your last post was just complete senseful, yes i do believe anything can exist, i mean Anything. Since we only managed to explore some few % of all oceans, we cannot know for sure what is under the the deep dark water and even if such dont exist here, there is highest possibility that they exist in some other world other than Earth, perhaps we wouldn't discover this in our time but maybe in next few or hundred years or a thousand years, all our beliefs and imaginations would come true and there wouldn't be anyone to realize that we already know this will happen.

with the whole evolution thing its said we were all once fish like creatures, and it is possible, some of us humans could've turned half human and half fish, this depends on a lot of different external factors. With evolution you also learn that organisms adapt to their environment and you also learn the aquatic environment is a much more easier place to live in. Why wouldn't a human like organism stay in the ocean? There are also a lot of mammals that can live under water for huge amounts of time like whales and dolphins, but then you have to take in the fact would we go up for air? would we be able to breathe? do we have some sort of physiological or structural mechanism that makes us breathe under water? and you cant deny the years and years of sightings and encounters. There are heaps of things in history we believe is true from just basic books or scriptures the bible is one. im not saying they do exist but im not daying they dont exist either.

In the 70's scientists said the only giant squid is in Disney studios, Just myths. We no little of what is in the ocean least of all other dimensions. So do not discount it because scientists say it does not exist. Look up forbidden science and forbidden archeology. They hide lots of finds because they do not fit in with the current beliefs.

interesting, ... what about the lost city of atlantis, was that always under sea, did strange mythic creatures exist then??, is there a possibility of mermaids and other such creatures of the heavans and seas that once had run of this planet, long beofre our time, who really knows...............

Sea Cows can not sit on rocks and comb their seaweed. They would die from their own weight. Sailors inlcusing Columbus, have seen humans with fins sitting on rocks completely out of water. So if it was not the rum or horny sailors then it could have been something else yet discovered.
