I did. My parents live next door so in case of Emergency we can just high tail it over a few hundred yards. The storage would be nice, but we have tons other space in other areas. We may build a cellar some day for protection and more storage, but we don't have the money right now. It's possible to build after the house. My dad is a carpenter/contractor and has owned his own business for over 30 years now and he has done a lot of weird things.lol:~}

I live in maisonette (2 floor house on top of a shop) I dont have a basement. I dont have any worries about that.

Coming from Texas, I wasn't use to basements. Attics, yes. Cellars, yes. Tornado shelters yes. Not basement though. It's such a weird feeling having another room and/or living room below the ground, BUT, besides the possibility for water damage that seems to happen in a lot of basements... I think they're cool, and yes, would buy one. It also depends on the place. Central Texas wouldn't be good for a basement because the ground is ALWAYS shifting, and I imagine that could be a huge problem. However, here in Northern Illinois, it's perfectly fine.

Of course!! basements/cellars r creepy!! Theres not many houses now-a-days that have them there mainly old houses it all underground garages now. Well it is here in england anyway.lol!!

A house without a basement is perfect for seniors who might have trouble going up and down stairs. I cannot see the benefit of a place that can become a dumping ground for the unwanted and forgotten artifacts.

I haven't seen a basement in 18 years. It is hard to build anything lower than the water table in Florida. I loved having one when I lived up north, though. I would prefer to have a basement (cellars are creepy, though)

Yes. I have. But I have lived in both configurations of houses and a basement can be an asset.

I've never even seen a house with a basement. No one has them here. So, yes, I would. I would not buy a house without an attic or storage shed, though.

I havn't seen a single house in Southern California with a basement. I think it has something to do with earthquakes. So, I did and I would. =)

Not if I have a choice. The basement is usually the coolest part of the house, is great for storage, extra bedrooms, and is the cheapest to build in square footage (where they are practical).

I did. You rarely see basements here because of the very hard soil. It's too hard, and not therefore cost-effective, to dig that deep for a house.

yes. I'd just pile all my junk in the attic. (assuming there's actually is an attic) i dunno. I suppose as long as there's room without needing a basement. last year one of my friends got their basement flooded because of very heavy rain.

No...we need it for storage, a laundry room, and we live in Missouri so we need a basement to run down to in case of a storm!

No. With three kids I couldn't live without my full basement (for extra storage) and it also comes in handy for the handful of tornado warnings we get each year.

I sure would. My last house didn't have a basement. It was a modular home that was constructed in a factory and was delivered to our lot in two pieces. It was placed on a concrete footing with concrete blocks down the centre. It was great, no cluttered basement,no additional heating costs to heat a basement,no worry about water leakage. As for tornadoes,I'll guess we'll see you in Oz.

I live in Iowa, so I definitely need to have a basement here. I live in a town that has been hit by tornadoes repeatedly in the past, so I feel much safer with it there. _ The one in our house now is approximately 7 feet deep. It's awesome. I only wish we could get it finished, so it would be a nice extra living area.

Sure. I lived most of my life without one. And even now, we built a home with a part basement, just big enough for the utilities and a giant crawlspace beneath most of the house.

I am Australian and have never seen a basement. I agree with someone else who said they wouldn't buy a house without a shed. Very few houses have attics that you can walk in like in the movies here, its just crawl space. So yes i have bought a few houses without basements and will never buy a house with one.

I live in Ohio so we are at the end of Tornado Alley. I bought a house with out a basement however I would have prefered to have one. We have had about 10 torando warnings this year and every time I could have kicked myself for having to crawl into a tiny closet.

I prefer a basement, clear up my garage so I can park my car in it! BUT, not all states have homes with basements. (Like the Southwest or the South) Depends on where you live!

Very few houses in the UK have basements. That is why our garages are all full of junk.

That is a simple matter of geography. Down south where the earth consists of mostly sand and plate. You can't have a home with a basement. Most homes in the south are block homes (cinder block.) If I were up north... I wouldn't want a home without one. But down here you have little to no choice.

Throughout the south, few homes are built WITH them. So, if you want to avoid flushing your money down the rent toilet, you buy a home without.

I work in Real Estate in Texas. believe it or not I have never been in a basement. Personally, it would not matter to me. price and sq. ft. do matter however.

Yes, in fact I recently did. There are not very many basements where I live. We do not have much choice in the matter. None of my family or friends here have a basement either.

I once owned a townhouse that was built "slab-on-grade", but to answer your question ... NO. I like to spend a little time "below grade". My home office is below grade. My family room is below grade. Two of our bathrooms are below grade. Our sauna is below grade. But most importantly, so is our poolroom ... and I don't mean billards. ;-)

I would be so happy just to able to buy a house (after 17 years of renting an apartment) that I could care less if it has a basement or not. After being homeless last year, I am just thankful to have a place to live

It would depend on the area that you are purchasing. Are all the houses around the home in question have just a slab or do they have basements? Is it common practice in your area to count finished square footage as living space or do they count above grade (above ground) living area? Would the houses in the price range that you are looking at without basements suit your needs? Would you have room to grow? Frankly, it is a really hard question to answer not knowing the circumstances. In Arizona the answer would be a resounding yes. No if's and's or but's. However, if you were living somewhere more in a newer area more in the midwest where they finish basements with beautiful living space or the ability to finish the basement to the quality as above grade finish that would be a harder question. It would depend on price and homes surrounding the home in question. If it is a turn of the century home. Sure, there isn't many that have basements that are barely more than storage and utility areas. Hope that helps.

our current house has no basement, the only house we've had without a basement in 25 yrs and i LOVE it. basements are musty, no matter how you dress them up they're still basements. ick.

Yes, in most cases the basement is not necessary, if there is enough place. In some locations it can also be a bad idea to have a basement, for instance at sea level or if floods are frequent.

Yes. I'm living in UK and in the Victorian terraces round here, everybody has a basement. I'd rather have an upstairs store room that's not damp though.

Considering that I live in Florida ... where MOST homes do not have basements ... yep, I guess I have bought a house or two without a basement ... although there are a FEW around ... I actuallly like basememts and wish there was a way to have one where I am at now ...

Depends on what part of the country you live in. Some areas don't have basements (often the water table is too high or the ground is too rocky - typically down south), others do (typically the midwest and the north). In St Louis we have both. Homes without basements don't sell as well as homes with basements sell, and they don't appreciate quite as well, but they do sell and they do appreciate.

We do not have basements on the West Coast (US). I wish we did, I think they are great. Earthquakes and basements do not mix well.

I never had one in England, when I moved to America with my Girlfriend and her parents they got one, so it depends on what country I buy a house in
