The Ark was a copy of the one that Exists in the Temple of God in Heaven. Inside contained the ten commandments on 2 tablets of stone given to Moses by God. It was to symbolize that which exists in heaven. The cover over the the tablets of stone is called the mercy seat on which the glory of God on earth shined in Moses' day. It was called, the Shekina. (forgive me if I spelled it wrong or called it wrong)

While the children of Israel were wandering. God gave instructions on how to build a movable tabernacle and in the Holy of Holies. Deep within the tabernacle was an ark made of wood and gold and held within it was the stones with the ten commandments written on them. God came down and dwelt in the ark. Anyone who touched the ark died. It disappeared during the time of Solomon.
