I have never done this. So, I can't recommend any specific applications for doing this. However, I would recommend going to http://www.versiontracker.com/ and doing a search for DVD rip.

Good luck, I've tried several 'free DVD converters' and they've all sucked the big one. PLUS, almost all DVDs are copy protected, so it generally doesn't work.
