Because the density of water is set as the standard of 1mg/ml. Other liquids have different densities. As in your example 1000ml/1 g/ml = 1000/g. A liquid with a density of 0.945 will weigh 945 g (weight = density x volume).

I would have said the same as you believe, but I guess we have been proved wrong by the others users. I hang my head in shame for the ignorance but I admit I am not good with these things. Regards
