Although I have no personal experience with this - I'm only going by what others have said, Windows emulators for Linux like 'Wine' sometimes have problems handling software (like games) that have demanding hardware needs. But most other Windows software should run just fine. Very few companies that write software for Windows also write Linux equivalents. That's simply because Linux users are less likely to spend money on software (if they can help it) and because Linux only occupies less than 2% of the desktop market. But there are lots of Open Source alternatives to most Windows programs. Games are the exception.

Yes and no. Some things work, some things don't. For the things that do work, you'll get slightly worse performance. Note: there are alternatives for most programs out there. There are some Linux games but, in general, they're not as sophisticated as Windows ones. If you're not technically inclined, I STRONGLY recommend that you find a local geek to help you.
