Why does my unaltered female cat, hiss and growl at my newly fixed male cat, even though they were best friends before the procedure?

Their scent changes when they get neutered.

Cats are incredibly territorial, and "he" now smells different to what he did before, things will settle, good idea is spray a little cologne or perfume on your hand and stroke both of them with it, also give them some nice treats like cooked chicken together on same plate, hopefully it will not take long before all is back to normal.

Youre male cat has a different smell now to her since hes fixed, she doesnt notice him as the 'old' cat she knew. That happens often. She might get used to him after a while.
