Ice melts faster in water. There is salt (sodium) in soda. Salt makes ice colder so that the air seems warmer and will melt it. Since the ice is submersed except for a small part of it, most of it is being kept cooler by the soda. Have you noticed salt melts ice faster, that is why people throw it on their driveways. It makes the ice colder so the air seems warmer and will melt it quickly. Same concept with soda. People use salt and ice to make homemade ice-cream for the same reasons. Salt makes the ice colder and it makes the ice-cream turn solid quicker when used.
