Why would a guy friend sound really cheerful while telling you he just wants to be your friend after you've said you like him?

Because he sincerely does want to be your friend. He doesn't want to hurt your feelings by telling you he isn't in love with you and he hopes you won't take it personally.

Likely because he doesn't want you to feel bad about it. Telling someone that you don't want to be with them is hard, and making it sound unenthusiastic or harsh is much harder. He more than likely, really does want to be your friend, so I think he made it sound cheerful so you'd believe it.

Maybe he does want to be your friend? When guys tell me they like me, I am cheerful about it because I don't want to make them feel bad about themselves. Girls have told me they like me, too, and I am the same way with them. There's no point in being harsh on them because one day they might wanna ask the love of their life out and they might be too scared to because of a harsh/rude reply. I'm not sure if those are the same reasons this guy was cheerful with you because I am a girl, but still. My point is that it does not mean that he likes you as more than a friend. There is no use in hoping if he's already given you an answer.

Because he is a big JERK! That's not right. He needs to be sad that he either doesn't feel the same way!
