I have a pet peeve: cashiers that can't count change back. It's basic math, and yet if the computer didn't tell them how much change to give, they would be lost. Thanks for letting me vent, chelsea!
-
I don't have a pet peeve with cashiers, but I don't like it when the grocery store, which has carried something for years, suddenly stops stocking an item I like. Very annoying.
-
Cashier is not completely our job description (I'm a cashier at a health food store, where are you?). You also have to double as customer service, which can be a burden when people get cranky, and boy do they like to find every fault in your job when they're pissed out. Don't throw their things around, always greet people warmly if you can't manage a smile, and keep any chitchat between employees work-friendly and to a relative minimum. It's okay to get a comfortable attitude with your job, just don't get 'settled in' and lose your manners like some of the WAL.MART employees I've had to deal with.

It's thoughtful and professional of you to ask, thank you Chelsea. I like it when cashiers make eye contact, remind consumers to use coupons if they have them (people often forget), and offer to help if a person seems puzzled by the card-swiping machine. Often these machines have buttons in different places and one doesn't readily see the correct button. If cashiers are familiar with the store's products it can also be helpful. I don't have any peeves, but I do notice and appreciate it if cashiers make these efforts.

I have worked at a grocery store for several years now. I have worked as a sacker, cashier, serive center cashier, stocker, and am currently the grocery manager. I notice a lot of what people do, and how customers want things done. 1. Be careful with all bread, chips, eggs, and anything else squishable. 2. If a customer buys a small soda or a candy bar, they are probably going to eat it. Offer it to the customer before you just sack it up. 3. If a customer asked you where something is, don't just say that you don't know. Find someone that does. 4. Don't give people dirty looks if they pay 100 dollars in all change. Just smile politely. 5. Never carry on a conversation with a fellow employee in front of a customer. Even if you continue checking them out while talking, it is still rude. All attention is to be focused on the customer. 6. If a customer buys something that is a buy one get one free item, make sure that if they only got one, that they are aware that they can get the next one free. 7. Know your produce and produce codes. Nothing is more annoying then a cashier that can't do her job because she has to ask cashiers around her (or lookup) a fruit or vegtable. 8. Know whats on sale. What item, size, price, variety, and so forth. 9. If you are required to get information from a person... (say they are righting a check, and your store requires that you check their drivers license) ALWAYS CHECK THE ID! Don't just take someones word for what there info is unless you know and trust them. You are protecting the customer, as well as your store. 10. THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT!!!!(usually)

I've worked in the Store business a long time also and I find that when the cashiers just go on and on about their problems to customers is very annoying to the customer and not saying Hello and Thank you to your customers is also rude
-
Dont answer your cell phone. Almost every time I shop somewhere, I get a snobby person who chit-chats, or has a text almost every three minutes. Just turning off your phone is better, no distractions for anyone.
-
I really don't care what a cashier does so long as they don't spend half an hour chatting to the person in front of me while I wait.
-
Please be nice. I don't have to shop there. Don't just give me a nasty look, ask me in monotone "Howareyoudoingtoday" and scan my stuff. Be chipper. I know it's a pain. I know. But it really does help. Convincing yourself to ACT happy will make you feel happier. Customer service sucks as a job requirement, but it is one! Be sweet!

If you see that were having a problem with those self-checkout machines, please stay a while to make sure that it works more than once. Me and friends were checking out some food stuff, and it was most frustrating because we had to keep calling someone every time it broke down :(

Pack carefully. Try to distribute the weight of the groceries among the bags kind of evenly. Don't put two things in a bag and think it's full. Aside from that most of the cashiers at my store are very nice and efficient and since I started using re-usuable bags, they pack everything much more carefully.
-
1. Ringing everything together after I told you I want to pay for certain items seperately. 2. Rushing me through the checkout because I'm your last customer. 3. Balling up my change with the receipt. 4. Talking to another employee while I'm standing there waiting for my total. 5. Throwing my food around like it's made of plastic. 6. Not giving me time to grab bags before pushing the next customers items ontop of mine. 7. Assuming I don't want a bag and placing the item in my hand.
-
No scratching & addressing personal hygene issues while handling my groceries please!
-
1. i hate when the cashier takes FOREVER to ring things up, and then takes even longer to put them into bags 2. it makes me mad as well when cashiers have a conversation with the person in front of me, even after all the items have been rang up, and im waiting forever. 3. also, when the cashier is really impolite, its so rude i needed to vent, lol
-
do not ask me if i need anything else please i understand that they put BS near register and stuff but stop trying to sell me something or get me to buy something i have no need for or want just leave it in plain site where it can be seen. some cashiers come off as thats all they are there for after they scan your stuff.
-
When the cashier and the person bagging your groceries are carrying on a conversation about last night's game, or party, or date, or...well, you get the idea.
-
While talking is fine, never STOP to talk ... if you can not keep scanning bar codes and bagging stuff while you chat, then do not chat ...
-
My only complaint for cashiers is they tend to scan the product then almost throw or do throw them off and grab the next item. I feel I carefully selected my purchaces as to my needs and wants. I have had some cashiers throw cans with the new pull tops so hard they break open! I realize they have to hurry and I realize they do this for several hours at a time and often do so quite tired. I try to always look at what their name is and greet them pleasently calling them by name and ask them how they are and feeling. I also kid the younger girls about it being Friday or Saturday evening and they could be having better fun elsewhere (with their BF). I very seldom become upset with any cashier. You all work very hard and do the best you can under often not the best of working conditions and pay. Just take a little more time and not throw my purcheses...Thanks. OH and Baggers...don't put so much in the bags of older and handy capped persons. It is often hard to get it in the house when the bags are too heavy...especially up the stairs!
-
1. When the cashier puts chemical items (such as laundry detergent) in the same bag with food items. 2. Bagging bread or eggs with heavier items that could squish them.
-
Please be gentle with the fruit. I intentionally choose fruit without bruises, so I don't appreciate it when the cashier bruises it for me by dropping it in the bag. I know they're supposed to be fast, but I really appreciate them taking the extra half-second to carefully place my fruit in the bag so it remains unbruised.
-
I don't like it when the cashier and the bagger are having a long conversation about other cashiers.
-
i actually work at a grocery store too, in customer service. the majority of the complaints we get deal with the cashier and bagger talking and ignoring the customer, if youre gonna talk, include the customer. the second biggest one is not saying thank you my own personal one, not folding the receipt and just kind of throwing everything in the persons hand, i always give the change first, money, then receipt. another thing, round up it just makes me mad when our cashiers dont round up, for example if the change is 48 or 49 cents just give 50
-
Biggest is when the cashier and the bagger or box person are talking about things together, especially like grievances against the company, complaints, what they did last night and with whom, yuck!!! Just be attentive to the customer, SMILE, be friendly and you'll be fine.
-
Why do cashiers insist on throwing all the heavy things with everything that can get smashed?!
-
When they talk to their coworkers about when they get to go on break/lunch, how much they don't want to be there, or even talk to other cashiers about anything other than the food I'm buying
-
When they act like they hate their job. Be pleasant please.
-
when you put 1 tiny little thing in a bag and i end up having 10 bags full of little tiny things... stuff the bags!!!
-
o.k. here are my pet peeves. 1. if your store has customer loyalty cards (like Kroger and CVS)ask if the customer has a card and scan it before you start scanning their purchases, some customer loyalty cards only register the sale price/record he purchase if there scanned first. 2. your there to work, not socialize, don't hold up line because your not finished talking to your friend/regular customer after their transaction is done, please, some of us are in a hurry so talk to people after work. 3. if your lane is not open, display the closed/next lane please sign and remove it as soon as your ready to check people out. don't make people leave their place in a long line because your lane seems empty 4. even if the total is displayed on the register, tell us what it is, some of us don't see so well and it is embarrassing to have to ask. (it makes me so mad at the store i shop at regularly because you can't see the register total, the cashier doesn't tell you unless you ask and they get huffy at you if you lean forward over the counter to see around the slim jims display to see for your self) 5. if your opening, OPEN ON TIME! it really sucks when you are late for work already, need to buy your lunch and the store doesn't open until ten minutes after the displayed opening time, even though the employees are visible in the store standing around doing nothing. 6. personally, I want to complete a business transaction when i go to the store, i don't want to make friends, i don't want to be remembered and commented about or greeted by name, i don't want to know your life story or tell you mine, i just want to pay for my purchases and leave. 7. if your working the deli counter and someone asks for a half a pound of ______, they want a HALF A POUND, not three quarters of a pound, not a pound, a half a pound. at the store i go to i ask for 1/4 pound of chicken salad ($4.49) to go with my lunch, in my office i have a tiny mini bar refrigerator barely big enough for a six pack of soda, i don't want to buy chicken salad to waste most of it, just what i intend to eat.now the sign says limit of at least 1.00 o.k. 1/4 of 4.49 is over 1.00 and i am just getting a side dish not dinner for four. so what does the person at the counter do? he scoops up a huge nearly fist size scoop and puts it in the plastic dish on the scale and asks is this alright?, big surprise its 0.56 pounds when i asked for 0.25 pounds. thats almost double my order. and because i'm in a hurry and don't like to tell people no i end up with twice the chicken salad i wanted, what i don't eat either spoils or freezes solid in my minibar and I'm not a happy customer.
-
I do not need to be chatted up. I don't need a comment on every product I buy. Some items (and I think you know the ones I'm talking about) I'd prefer you pretended you didn't see.
-
double bagging things that don't need to be, like bread.
-
Most cashiers I've had in grocery stores have been very polite and thoughtful. Not so in department stores though. The main things I wouldn't like are: Letting people line up at your checkout and then putting up the closed sign without warning. A checkout worker chatting for ages with the customer in front of me when I am in a hurry (which is nearly always if I am there in my lunch hour) Eye rolling at me because I'm maybe old enough to be their mum and not dressed in the latest trendiest fashions. Not saying hello to me or thanks after I've made my purchases. Someone who is rude and impatient with elderly people or those with a disability. One day they will probably be elderly and maybe slow too. Mind you, most cashiers are patient - there is more likely to be a problem with other shoppers in the line.
-
Look at the customer. It is annoying when the checker avoids eye contact as if you are not even there.
-
Actually I don't think there is anything you can do about mine, because it's not really your fault. But my biggest pet peeve is when I go to the store and even though the store has about 20 check-out lanes, only 5 of them are open and the lines in each one stretch all the way back to the aisles! I can't stand it. I could just be picking up something real quick like bread and milk, but I have to wait 20 minutes for everyone ahead of me with carts full of groceries! Makes me want to scream sometimes.
-
how thoughtful of you to ask. if you bag anything, or you can instruct the bagger, tell them to put meat in a separate bag, bag cleansers together and not with food, bag frozen items together, and bag refrigerated goods together.
-
When they take their sweet ass time ringing things up....like i wanna be there all day
-
I think it's rude when they start a conversation with the customer in front of you but when its your turn to be rung up they don't say anything.
