Morality exists because without it there would be chaos. We can debate the validity of various people's ideas of morality, but the underlying reason for morality is to provide society with order and stability. Morality tells us that it is not acceptable to kill people simply for the sake of killing. Morality protects a person's right to his possessions. Morality even can help to prevent the spread of certain diseases. If there were no morality, then people would be free to do as they wished which would mean that no one could be stopped from stealing, murdering, raping, etc.

There is a strong evolutionary argument for morality. Man is a social animal and to have individuals in a social system that have no "morals" would lead to a complete breakdown in the societal system. As we are a social animal we would lose our one of our primary evolutionary advantages and risk extinction. Other social animals exhibit similar morals if you will. Look at Bees. They don't allow a psychotic soldier to run riot through the whole hive but rather work together to ensure continued group survival. This is in my opinion a primitive example of moral behaviour. They do not allow unfettered actions to harm the "greater good". As humans with reasoning powers we have built on this so it is not pure survival that drives us but I think there is a strong case for morals emerging as a good survival trait.

Considerate behaviour amongst members of a group can have a strong binding influence, creating dedication at all levels. The resulting allegiance by members to a family, sect, tribe or nation reinforces the group's infuence, and can be critical in determing its survival.

8-6-2017 When two or more people live in the same area they have to adopt some rules about who does what to whom. Any such rule is called a more', French accented e pronounced "mor-ay". The adjective form is moral, and the habit of following more's is morality. More's are arbitrary: they do not have to be right, only accepted. Another group on the other side of the river might have very different more's.

Morality exists because of God's existence. Having moral principles come from The Ten Commandments, regardless if you are a believer or not. Romans 13:1-2 "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation."
