Just ignore them, eventually they'll get the hint -- hopefully..

How long has this been going on for? If it's been awhile it's going to be a hard thing to do without hurting their feelings. Just sit them down and be gentle but direct with them about how you feel.

There really is no easy way or less hurtful way to do this. But keep in mind that it needs to be done and the sooner the better. You need to remain true to yourself. Of course you are aware that it isn't written in stone that you have to be friends with those who look to you as a friend. Your question leaves too much gray area. Like is this person expecting something from you or depending on you to show your friendship? The reason I say this is I have people who see me as a friend which I have not really made my friend but they do not hang around me like a close friend would, in which case I do not discourage them at all. Perhaps this person does not see you as a friend but is hoping to make that bond. But regardless what is going on you need to always talk things out in a calm but understanding manner. Sure they may be hurt but they will be more hurt, the longer you put it off. Best of luck.
