Go Fish.

You could try teaching him Cribbage - It'd be a great way to expand on his math - it'd be tough at first, but can be really enjoyable.
-
Snap pure and simple (dont forget to let them win a few.lol.
-
Go fish would be fun for your grandchild.
-
Cheat is pretty easy, and a lot of fun for kids. =)
-
My son learned Kings Corners pretty easily at that age, crazy 8s, Go Fish, War...those are a few I can think of.
-
Go fish. War. Easy games that are played with two people.
-
Memory or No Peek.
-
crazy eights. slap jack. king in the corner. matching. go fish.make one up or let them.
-
I always enjoyed "Go Fish" as well when I was a kid.

My experience with children under 6 and cards is that they're more interested in flipping things over and picking them up as opposed to playing something with fixed rules. :) But definitely try and teach him/her something. Go Fish is a good option that's easy to learn, but they may find it boring. If you feel up to it, SlapJack can be fun, but be warned that it's a very physical game. If you have more family members around, try playing Uno or Crazy Eights. You could play them with two, but they're very social games (at least in my past) and the more people playing, the better the experience will be. I do not suggest War. It's too long and repetitive to keep most adults' attention, much less a 5 year old.
-
old maid, crazy 8's, go fish . Try to stack them with out them falling was always time consuming for me. Making towers with the cards.
-
go fish or old maid
-
my mom plays old maid with my four year old
-
My granddaughter is five also and we play : War....teaches her which numbers beats what numbers. Go Fish Slap Jack...split the cards between both of you and take turns throwing down cards and when you see a jack who ever slaps it first wins all the cards in the pile.
-
My children loved 'House' at that age and younger (and even older) Deal seven cards each - arrange in two rows of three - the basic outline of a house - and one - for the 'chimney'- on top. the cards are face up - just ensure that there are not four of any one dealt out and then it's simply a matter of going through the deck and turning over the cards in your 'house' as they are matched from the deck. First one to turn over all cards wins : )

Texas Hold'em, great way to keep the inheritence for yourself.
-
These are all great games listed. You can also play a simple version of rummy (4 of a kind and 3 of a kind -- you can only keep 7 cards at a time). Also...teach your grandchild how to shuffle cards. It's fun for them to know how to do that so they don't always have to ask an adult to do it. If their hands are too small, teach them to shuffle the deck "sideways" (bend the cards sideways instead of length-ways)
-
UNO, my daughter loves it. It's like crazy eights.
-
WAR!
-
Grand feft auto the card game
-
I'd suggest UNO, but you'd have to buy the special UNO pack of cards.
-
An easier game than fish that I used to play with my Dad at that age is called WAR. Each player puts down a card the highest car wins and captures the lower cad. Matching cadrds go to war. Each player then lays down three cards face down W.A.R. and then both flip over a fourth card the highest wins all cards played up and face down in that war round. The ultimate winner of the game is the person that captures all 52 cards in the deck. It teaches young kids card order and counting. Keeps their attention for a long time too.
-
I doubt it. maybe a little advanced for a 5 yr old but they will get it pretty quickly and actually learn about playing cards.
-
My dad and I used to play War, Rummy, Spit and Hearts. All. The. Time. Spit was my favourite, since it was a speed game.

yugioh is always fun but its confuzing some times

Crazy eights is a good one. The 8s are wild. Each person gets 7 cards. There is a pile and a discard pile. The first discard is turned up. The player has to either match the number or the suit ad then can lay a card on the discard. When a player cant go they draw from the card pile. If they have an 8 they can change the suit by calling out the new suit. First player to be rid of all his cards is the winner. my daughter has been playing since she was three and a half.

When my grand-daughter was about the same age, I bought a tin box containing Old Maid, Go Fish, Crazy 8's and a set of pick-up-sticks. Has provided many hours of fun.
