What would happen if two black holes met? Would they combine to make a larger balck hole with all of the mass combined?

From my knowledge i believe that it would be impossible for two black holes to meet, because any star that was big enough that was close by, to make a black hole, would be sucked into the original black hole. But if they did meet, i believe they would probably do something extremely unexpected, im not able to fathom anything that would make sense.

they would combine and this would result in a kick that would send the new larger black hole hurtling through space at speeds up to 4,000 km per second. in theory anyway :)

Two black holes can join but they can never split into two.
