Why did Romans greet each other with an arm grasp (opposed to shaking hands)?

i dont know the real reason, but i guess its more personal, or it could have just been a culture thing. why DO we shake hands?

Pure Hollywood. Romans shook hands, not wrists.

it was to be sure the other person wasn't hiding a weapon. It was like frisking each other upon meeting, but a lot more polite lol!

Yes, that's the impression I get from watching movies based on that period of history. It probably was a closer and more personal way of greeting a friend.

There are many ways of greeting: hands raised (various forms of the salute) clasping hands clasping wrists They are all forms of telling another person that you do not have a weapon.

Because it was way cool and more manly. Although it made it more difficult to exchange cash for a packet of coke than a handshake.
