If you get a companion for the parakeet, then most likely the bird will become infatuated with the other bird and will become less friendly toward you (this is also true in regards to the mirror, the bird believes there is another bird in the cage). If you do decide to get another one, you should get another cage and slowly bring the two closer together so they can become accustomed to each other. You should also avoid putting two or more females together as they have been known to fight. Two males is usually o.k. To determine the sex, look at the birds beak. The area above the beak will most likely either be blue or brown. Blue=male, brown=female. I have however seen violet or purple which I think is also male, but if I remember correctly, babies also have purple.

I would highly recommend it. My recommendation would be either a nice cat or a large python. Either one will keep him company. ; - )

I had a parakeet started off with 1 I did put a mirror and it did that same thing yours is doing the best thing to do is get another one if you want to have eggs get the oppised gender if you just want it to have a friend get the same gender . That is a sign it will need a friend to play with or much likely it is lonley

If you get the bird a companion it will turn all it's attentions to the other bird and may forget it's friendship with you. If you want a good companion bird, keep it by itself and do lots of things together, have a meal together, watch tv or go online with it on your shoulder. Give it lots of Toys, but no mirror if you can resist. But if you want to risk losing his friendship, try another bird but be ready for him to be less friendly. Occasionally if the bird was handraised by people, he will still like you, but most of the time they just can't help it, they like birds better :-)
